just breathe | maisie & ____
Maisie’s shift had finally ended, and God, was she grateful. The entire day, her lungs felt as though they were burning, and she could feel the hot fluid swishing around in them, obstructing her alveoli and making it impossible to breathe right. She’d been coughing more than usual - and frantically apologizing to every customer that came in because of it.
Walking out of the store with her oxygen tank trailing behind her, her small body erupted into a spasm of more coughs. Ugh. She felt about ten times worse than usual. She knew she needed to take a moment before getting into her car, and so she sat down on the bench close to where she parked.
Her coughing fit wouldn’t seem to stop. Every week or so, she’d have a really bad once like this. She gasped for breath and sucked it in before coughing the air back out, the heavy sound of her brochial breathing ringing in her ears. Tears in her eyes and bent at the waist, the fit continued and distracted her so much she didn’t see the person walking up to help her.
Fog carpeted the cemetery floor. The only noise for yards was the distant hum of traffic and the buzzing of a street light above. Carrion pulled in thick smoke from a joint held loosely between his narrow lips. His chest expanded as his lungs filled. Exhaling, a grey cloud rose into the still night air. His broad-shouldered body slouched against the cold, hard tin that made up the walls of a large shed as his head swam with thoughts gone astray.
Suddenly, the sound of a twig breaking beneath a clumsy foot drew Carrion from his haze. He held his position and listened for any more movement...
Kitty stared down at the miserable looking notebook on the counter before her. She was supposed to have over five hundred words by now, but what she had was a sentence, A land without water is no land at all. “That doesn’t even make any sense,” she mumbled, preparing herself to tear it out.

Kit-Kat: Were you in my room last night or was that Dad again?
Kit-Kat: Because my door was not open when I went to sleep
Kit-Kat: Maybe it was Jasper...
“I’m fine. Fine, I tell you. And do you know why? Because I got a text, a whole bunch of ‘em to be exact. And you know what? He is doing fine without me... He’s doing fine without me...”
Excuse me. Err, I couldn’t help but notice you. There’s something quite iridescent about the way you hold yourself. That, and, you look a lot like someone I used to know. I’d kick myself if I let you walk out of the coffee shop without knowing your name...
I’m Carrion. Would you mind if I sat with you for a moment?
“It’s way to nice out to not enjoy this day.”
