Curio woke up with a start. He blinked and shivered. Every nerve in his body felt like there was a constant electric current going through him. It was not like his normal currents that he usually feels. This felt wrong. Out of control.
He just wanted to stay in his room, curled up on his bed, with the covers pulled over his head.
Slowly he sat up and got dressed. It felt like the clothes was scratching against his skin, irritating him. Everything felt a bit off, the lights a little to bright, sounds slightly to loud.
As he finished dressing and wrapped his jacket tightly around him before shivering again.
The lights flickered around him and he flinched slightly as he left the room, closing the door behind him. As he walked the lights around him that was off, turned on. Those that was on, flickered erratically.
He rubbed his arms as he walked to the gym, since it was their training period at the moment.
Shaun looked up at Curio walked into the gym. He already knew the other guy was on his way, due to the strange flickering of the lights. It’s been a long time since Curio caused an entrance like that.
The blond teen looked disheveled and paler than usually.
“Hey Cure” Roland said, walking over to him “Are you alright? You look a little pale over there”
Curio glanced up at him and winced at the bright light. “I’m okay...” he said, rubbing his arms “Just feeling a bit unstable today”
“You sure you’re good?” Shaun asked.
Curio just nodded. “Yeah... I’m good” he said “I just feel cold... that’s all... and a bit unstable”
“Just take it easy and tell me when you don’t feel alright any more” Shaun said.
Curio nodded again. “I will” he said “I will do my best”
“I swear, if you don’t” Shaun warned “I will tie you to the bloody bed and force you to rest”
Wringing his hands together, he followed after Shaun and Roland.
***
Curio fell back as the attack hit his chest. He gasped feeling his fragile control slipping. It took him a moment before he realized that there was thunder sounding all around him.
His body felt like it was burning.
The lightning tore through his body with every breath he took. He could hear the sounds of the other students calling out.
Shaun and Roland watched with a shocked expressions on their face. This was not good. It’s been a long time, but Curio losing his control like this, usually means trouble for everyone.
One of the instructors came in, running towards the lightning user.
Before Shaun or Roland could say a word, the man injected him with a syringe. Curio’s blue eyes widened for a moment before rolling back and he just slumped to the ground, going completely limp. Slowly the lightning storm around him started to calm down, until it completely disappeared. It left burn and lightning marks on the floor and ceiling.
The instructor lifted Curio of the floor as two other came in.
Shaun immediately recognized the metal band the put around Curio’s wrist.
A damper.
As the band clicked closed around Curio’s wrist, the teen let out a whimper, going paler than before.
“Where are going to treat him?” Shaun asked, before the instructors could leave.
“The medical wing” one of them said.
“Solitary confinement” the other one said “Until his power are back under control”
Shaun and Roland stared at them with shock.
“WHY?” Shaun snapped “He didn’t do anything wrong”
“Until his power are back under control, he’s staying in solitary” the instructor shot back before leaving.
***
Curio struggled to open his eyes. There was a painful pounding in his head. It made it hard to keep his thoughts in control.
When he finally managed to get his eyes to open, the white of the room he was in, stung his eyes and he flinched back, making the pounding in his head become even worse than before.
He let out a whimper and curled up on his side.
His head felt like it was swimming and he felt hot and cold at the same times, shivers ripping through him, before the coughing started. He could feel where the bracelet was around his wrist when they brought him in, the phantom cold was almost like a burn over his skin.
Slowly Curio tried to sit up, but his strength just gave in and he fell back. There wasn’t even blanket of anything in the room. So he just curled up on his side.
He stared blankly out at the white padded wall of the room.
Shaun stared at the computer screen, his hands clenched into fists.
Curio looked so much smaller than he really was, curled up on his side. The teen was shaking and coughing.
Soft whimpers sounded from Curio as he just lay there curled up into a small ball. He looked so small and fragile. Almost like a child. It wasn’t right. This was worse than just looking at him losing his control for a while.
“This is not right” Shaun growled.
“He shouldn’t be there...” Roland said “He should be either in his room or in the infirmary”
“We cannot let him out until his power has stabilized” the doctor said.
“He’s not going to stabilize if you keep him in there” Shaun snapped “Just look at him, do you see that? Every time you stopped his power, he was in the hospital for more than a week”
“We cannot let him out of solitary” the doctor said again.
Roland spun and grabbed the man by the front of his shirt. “You will kill him in that place....” he snarled.
“ROLAND” Shaun snapped, grabbing his friend’s wrists, pulling him away.
The sound of the sob through the speakers made Roland freeze, slowly he let go of the doctor and turned to the computer screen. His eyes went wide.
“Please...” Roland said “Let us go in there?”
Curio was gasping, tears running down his face, curled up. He started coughing again. This time worse than before, blood dripped down his lips.
“Let us go in” Shaun snapped “He’s getting worse”
Fiona came marching into the room. “Open the door” she said, her grey-green eyes flashing with anger.
“We cannot” the doctor said.
“If you don’t open that door right now, I’m going to curse you until you cannot move anything more from the pain” Fiona said, hands balled into fists “Now OPEN that door”
The doctor narrowed his eyes at Fiona, but still opened the door.
Fiona glared at him as she quickly ran towards the door. She quickly walked over to where Curio were curled up on his side, tears running down his cheeks as he whimpered.
She knelt next to him.
“Cure...” she said softly, brushing his sweaty hair back “It’s alright... I’m here now”
Curio’s blue eyes flickered to her. He whimpered before his eyes flickered closed. Fiona sighed and gently pulled Curio into her arms. A soft purple mist burst from her before settling around the two of them.
Another whimper sounded from Curio, he rested his head against her shoulder, gasping as more blood dripped down his lips.
Fiona brushed his hair back, just holding him. “It’s alright.... It’s alright” she said softly “I’m here now... I’ll make sure you’re alright... Don’t worry about it”
Curio shivered, before his eyes started closing and he slumped against Fiona.
“Shaun” Fiona said, not raising her voice “Can you bring me a few blankets?”
After a moment, Shaun came in, wrapping a blanket around Curio and Fiona. “Tell me if you need anything else” he said quietly.
Fiona nodded. “He’s sleeping now” she said “He will be alright, as soon as we get him out of this room”
“Alright.... As soon as you’re ready, we’ll take him to his room” Shaun said before he left the room again.
Fiona just hugged Curio tighter to her. “I wouldn’t let anything happen you...” she whispered “Not while I can do something about it.... Never again, not like this”
Reiken frowned slightly, looking at Alice and Fuki.
"What are you two doing?" he asked, slowly crossing his arms. The two of them looked like they were rolling around on the ground outside. He had no idea how the two of them managed that. All he did was ask them to go find some herbs.
Fuki and Alice looked at each other before huffing and turning away.
"What happened?" Reiken asked, more sternly this time. It almost sounded like he was talking to two children.
They glared at the ground.
"Nothing..." the two said.
"Then why do you look like you've gone tumbling down the mountain?" Reiken asked, crossing his arms.
"Nothing you need to worry about," Alice said, with a pout.
Fuki glumly stared at the ground, not looking up at Reiken. He felt like a child being scolded.
"Did you two find the herbs I asked for?" Reiken asked, feeling slightly annoyed at the two. If they kept this up, he was going to lose his patience with them.
"No, Sage...." they said quietly.
Reiken took a deep breath. He was going to lose it with these two.
"Why... didn't you find it?" he asked slowly.
"We did find some..." Alice said.
"Then where is it?" Reiken asked.
"We... lost it" Fuki said.
Reiken clenching his jaw. "And how.... did you manage that?" he asked "Did you drop it? Throw it away? Threw each other with it?"
Their faces looked guilty and Reiken groaned.
"Why.... can't the two of you just.... just work together?" Reiken asked, frustrated "It's not... that difficult... We need those herbs"
"We know Sage..." they said.
"Then why....?" Reiken asked.
"We don't know, Sage..."
"But he started it" Alice said.
"No I didn't!" Fuki shot back "You started it.... You lost the herbs"
"Stop calling me Sage" Reiken snapped, hand clenching into fists. He was tired and frustrated and did not have the energy to deal with them at the moment. Shaking his head he turned away and walked towards the kitchen. There he pulled out a small tin, taking out a bit of the money.
Fuki and Alice glared at each other as Reiken walked back to them.
"Take this" he said "Go buy the cursing herbs at the village"
The two stared at the money. Usually Reiken did not use money, they barely had any money to spend. Both of them just stared at his hand.
"Well?" Reiken asked, a bit annoyed.
Quickly Fuki took the money. He felt so guilty about what happened.
"Sorry Sage... "Alice said, looking down as well.
"What are you waiting for?" Reiken asked, voice a bit harsher than usual "Go... before it gets late..."
They nodded and quickly left the cottage.
Reiken sighed as he just sank down onto the couch. He took a deep breath. Maybe he was a bit to hard on them. They were trying their best, but they were driving him mad with their constant bickering.
***
Reiken woke up with a start. Slowly he sat up, looking around. This was the first time he'd fallen asleep on the couch for the first time since Alice and Fuki moved in.
He looked around in the cottage.
It didn't look like Fuki and Alice had returned yet. Immediately a frown formed on his face. He felt the worry rising in his chest. That was not good. Hopefully they were too mad at him for sending them down the mountain to buy the herbs.
Quickly he got to his feet and grabbed his coat.
This gave him an uneasy feeling. He needed to go check on them, even if that meant going down the mountain and to the village.
Clenching his jaw, he quickly started on his way down to the mountain. This was terrible. He was getting more and more worried as he walked. Slowly his speed started to increase.
He did not want those two to get into trouble in the village. Gruen and the others will never stop teasing him about it.
Shaking his head, he kept on moving. Two hours were a long time... but he knew how to take the shortest road to the village. It was almost a dangerous one, that's why he even told the others about it.
Especially Fuki and Alice.
Those two were even more reckless than Gruen and the others. They were reckless, but not as much as the other two.
He reached the village and stopped, just staring at it. There was too much movement there. This was not good. It looked so chaotic there that he had no idea what was going on. Quickly he made his down, pulling his hood over his head.
As he walked through the streets, he glanced from one side to the other, making sure not to get too close or draw too much attention.
He made his way over to the Inn. It didn't look like it was too busy there and it was the best place to find out what's going on. If he wanted to find Fuki and Alice, the innkeeper will know where they are.
Soundlessly he slipped into the building, making his way over to the counter.
"Reiken..." the Innkeeper said as he noticed the sage "What are you doing here?"
Reiken nodded. "...I'm... I'm looking for.... Fuki... and... A-Alice..." he stuttered slightly "...Do you.... know where they... what happened?"
The Innkeeper sighed. "They came by to get a herb mix" he said "That was.... hours ago... I'm not sure where they now.... but you should ask at the spice shop"
With a sigh, Reiken nodded and stepped back. "What's... why are there so... many people?" he asked.
"There's some strange group that's been here since yesterday...." the Innkeeper said "I don't know who they are..."
Reiken swallowed. "T-thank you..." he muttered, quickly leaving the inn. Outside he looked around. There were so many people in the street. It took him a moment before he realized that it was Spirit clan members. If they find Alice and Fuki there will be trouble.
***
Reiken paused for a moment. He stepped out of the spice shop. No one knew where they were. He couldn't find any trace of the two.
Now he was starting to get really worried about them. He needed to find them quickly, before they caused any trouble, or before they get into trouble. Neither options were good.
The only thing he could find out was that the spirit clan was not staying in two, they were camping outside.
Taking a deep breath, Reiken headed to where they've told him the camp was. He was not going to leave those two they're on their own. Not if he could do something about it.
It didn't take him very long to reach the camp.
Immediately two men stopped him.
"What do you want?" one of the men snapped at him.
Reiken lifted his head slightly. "I'm... looking for my... friends" he said softly "The... villagers said... they've seen them... here... with you"
The man narrowed his eyes at Reiken. "Why the hell will we have your friends?" he snapped "We are just camping out here, so go mind your own business"
"Please... my friends might have... accidentally wandered in here..." Reiken said "Can I just... check?"
"What do you want?" the man asked, crossing his arms.
Reiken took a deep breath. "I just need to see if they... are here" he said softly, eyes flickering around.
"MASTER REIKEN!" a voice yelled from inside the camp "SAGE REIKEN!"
Immediately Reiken's eyes snapped towards the man that tried to stop him. "Move" he said.
"You are not allowed inside"
"Move..." Reiken repeated "Or else.... I'll will make you move"
The man stared at him, a shocked expression on his face. "Why the hell will I listen to you?" he snapped.
Reiken tilted his head slightly, eyes narrowing at the man. "Give them back..." he said voice cold and strong. "Or else I will make you regret touching them..."
For a moment the man hesitated.
Anger flashed through Reiken as he took a step forward. Immediately the man stepped back. "Where.... are... they?" Reiken asked slowly, a cold look in his eyes.
Immediately the man lifted his hands in a fighting stance.
"Move" Reiken said, in almost a growl.
"What is going on here?" another spirit clan member asked, walking up to them.
Reiken's eyes flashed towards the man. "I'm here to take them back..." he said coldly, feeling a gentle warmth around his wrist. It was almost like the bracelet was giving him permission to get his friends... No... they were his family. To get his family back.
"What are you talking about?" the new man asked.
"Fuki and Alice" Reiken said coldly "Give them back... before I take them back"
"Just who do you think you are?" the man asked.
"SAGE!" Fuki's voice called out.
There was a commotion, before two figures came running out. They barely made it into the open, before power hit them from behind, throwing both of them to the ground.
Anger shot through Reiken as he watched the two fall.
Alice looked at him as she went down.
He could make out tear stains on her face, which fueled his anger even more.
"SAGE!" Fuki called out "Leave! Don't mind us... Please... We don't want to cause trouble...."
Reiken just watched as a group of Spirit clan members came over, grabbed Alice and Fuki and roughly pulled them to their feet. One of them backhanded Fuki through the face.
The temperature around Reiken dropped. As he breathed out, it came out as visible hot air.
The ground rumbled beneath his feet.
Fuki and Alice's eyes widened as they looked at Reiken. They have never seen Reiken get angry. Frustrated, annoyed and irritated, yes, but never angry.
It looked like the air around him started shimmering.
Clouds rolled in front of the sun. Dark heavy clouds. Thunder rumbled through the sky.
Reiken slowly looked at the spirit clan members.
"let... them go" he said for the last time.
The two members stepped back away from him. As soon as they reached for their power, Reiken's hands snapped out.
A gust of wind, slammed into the two, throwing them back. With a tisk, he started striding forwards. The wind rustled his clothes as he walked.
"Sage...." Fuki breathed, just staring at Reiken.
The group of spirit clan members all turned towards Reiken, ready to fight. All though they did look confused at what was happening.
"...Sage..." Alice whispered.
Reiken looked at her, smiling gently. "It's okay..." he said "We're going home"
"What do you think you're doing?" one of the men snapped.
Immediately Reiken's attention snapped towards him. Without any indication, the ground shifted. A vine shot out, grabbing the man around the throat and throwing him back against one of the tents.
"Let them go" Reiken said, voice ice cold.
"No" another guy snapped.
A gust of wind slammed into the man, holding him in the air. Ignoring the man, Reiken kept on moving towards Alice and Fuki. He was not going to let anything else happen to them.
As he reached them, more of the spirit clan rushed towards him. A wall of fire shot up between him, Fuki, Alice and the spirit clan.
"Are you two alright?" Reiken asked softly, holding his hands out to Fuki and Alice.
Alice looked up at him, tears in her eyes. Her lip trembled.
"We're sorry...." she whispered.
Immediately Reiken's expression softened as he looked at them. "Hey... It is alright..." he said gently "Are you two alright, did they hurt you?"
Alice shook her head.
Reiken looked over at Fuki.
"We're okay..." Fuki said softly, his voice trembling slightly.
"Good..." Reiken said "Let's go back to the village"
Fuki and Alice nodded.
"Thank you, Sage" the two said softly, not looking at him "And we're sorry..."
Reiken smiled slightly. "That's alright.... You did not do anything wrong" he said. He motioned for the two to start walking. As they passed him, he let the walls of fire die and he turned to the spirit clan.
There were a lot of them gathered just outside the range of the fire.
Rain started pouring down as Reiken's anger flared up again.
"You will regret touching them" he snapped at the spirit clan.
They rushed towards him. Reiken let out a scream, as the elements exploded around him. Wind threw some of them to the ground. Others were thrown into tents and poles. Fire sucked the oxygen from the air, causing more of them to lose consciousness.
When the last of the spirit clan members fell, Reiken just watched them for a moment.
The rain kept on falling.
Slowly he turned back to where Alice and Fuki were waiting for him. Without a word he walked over. He nodded at the two before continuing.
***
In the village Reiken opened the door to the inn and nodded to Fuki and Alice to go in. He was not going to let the two of them go out of his sight for a while.
Fuki and Alice were soaked.
He was still slightly mad at the two of them, so he did not block the rain from falling on them.
The Innkeeper looked over at Reiken, blinking a bit surprised.
"Oh... You've found them" he said and Reiken nodded.
"Do you have... room for... tonight?" Reiken asked softly, looking at the man. Both Fuki and Alice next to him, looking down at the ground, like two guilty kids.
The Innkeeper smiled slightly before he nodded. "Of course" he said "you know that we always have room for you"
Reiken nodded, before giving the man a bow. He narrowed his eyes at Fuki and Alice. The two of them glanced at Reiken before they also bowed.
"Thank you very much...." they said at the same time.
With that, Reiken turned and walked away. He folded his hands behind his back as he walked, not looking to see if the other two were following him, but he could feel their eyes on his back.
The room he went to had three beds.
Reiken took two of the blankets and turned towards the two, holding out the blankets.
"Here... take these..." he said softly "You'll get cold"
