As a kid, I’d grown up the smart one. Nerdy, even.

Well, definitely nerdy... I’ll be honest with you.

Since when is it a crime to be smart? To be good at learning? Since when does it have to become a prison sentence, selling your soul for 4+ years at a university, only to sell it again to the even bigger devil when you finish– corporate Simerica.

No one could understand why I didn’t want to do it. Why on earth would smart little Al--.... Nik throw it all away like that? Throw away his smarts? As if intelligence was as trivial and material as an old shirt, that you could just discard in the trash. As if it wasn’t useful to do anything else but what they wanted me to do.

They just didn’t get it. And I refused to fall in line with what they wanted.
