New Faces, Old Traditions, One Barkada
This past weekend we celebrated the Northeastern Asian American Center's 10th Anniversary. During this special event, many Barkada alumni came back to Northeastern to celebrate, during both the annually held Celebr(Asian) and the 10th Anniversary Gala. While many things have changed within Barkada, such as the size of the organization, (with a whopping 25+ newbie class) tradition will always remain tradition and Barkada will always remain Barkada.
Barkada as a student group lends itself to the origin of its name--Tagalog for a "group of friends." A word and group built on the selflessness of establishing and growing community, quite simply, we are a "barkada" and a family. We all come from different backgrounds, states, countries, you name it. Despite this, Barkada will always remain constant. We always remember the values and traditions that have brought us to where we are today. The emphasis of family, friends, and community from the Filipino culture are what drives us as a student organization.
Barkada continues to run its BIGGIEsmalls program, eat plenty of food at family dinners (sometimes even Kamayan), dance its butts off, and be the LOUDEST and most SUPPORTIVE group at every chance we get. These are our friends. This is our family. And this, is our Barkada.
Thank you, everyone, for all the support you have given us through the years. Whether you're an oldie or a newbie, you will always be a part of this Barkada.
Peace. Love. Barkada.
