Guess What......???

Hey everyone,

So sorry for the delay - what a long, emotional day.

We arrived at the hospital earlier so i could calm my nerves before the scan and the receptionist at the specialist unit couldn't find my appointment on the system. After a wild goose chase, it turned out my appointment had been rescheduled to next Thursday but we weren't aware of this... Typical i thought but i wasn't leaving the hospital until we had our scan as we've been waiting for what seems like forever anyway. The receptionist apologised and said she would squeeze us in... How kind of them eh?!

2 and a bit hours later, the midwife called my name and i felt like my heart was trying to escape from my chest. We went into the room and the specialist doctor and two midwife were there. My Mum and Chris came in with me and Chris held my hand all the way through. The look on his face was priceless, he looked like such a proud Daddy and my Mum looked like she was going to burst out crying at any second as this was the first scan she has been too - so glad she came to the appointment too. 

The doctor checked our little one from head to toe then after about 15 minutes he turned to us and said the baby looked fine to him. Everything was where it should be and working the way it should be and there were absolutely no markers for downs syndrome - i couldn't believe what i was hearing, our baby was healthy - i felt like i was dreaming.

We left the room and i couldn't stop shaking. We sat in one of the counselling rooms whilst the doctor typed up my notes. As soon as the midwife left the room and closed the door i broke down crying. I felt like all of the stress and worry from this past month had just disappeared and it was nice to cry happy tears for a change. When the midwife came back with my notes i looked through and checked the nuchal fold measurement. Our little one's measurement at 12 weeks was 4.3mm and has now decreased to 3.1mm so we are well within the considered 'safe zone.'

We couldn't find out the sex of the baby as he/she is still too small however we got the news we wanted and came for so i couldn't be happier. We are booked in for another scan on Monday 15th July, when i'll be 21 weeks, & we'll find out the sex then.

I can't stop smiling, i feel like a bit weight has been lifted and i can now finally enjoy my pregnancy. It so strange how such a little thing, that you haven't even met can cause so much worry but i'm so protective over this little one i would do anything to make sure he/she gets the best possible start to life - really cannot wait till he or she is here.

One Step Closer...

Really wish it was next Thursday. I just want to get to the bottom of what is happening with our little Prince or Princess. Really hope everything is ok, i feel like i'm going out of my mind with worrying so much and feel so helpless there is nothing i can do.

Fingers crossed all is ok and if everything is ok we get to find out the sex of our baby so happy thoughts people!

What Would You Do? Advice needed?

Hi everyone,

I really need your advice - all comments will be greatly appreciated.

We had our scan of our little one on Tuesday and what an active little thing he / she was - i instantly fell in love.

After a few minutes, the sonographer asked if we would like to check the baby for any anomalies. We went ahead with this, just in case and it turned out the baby has extra fluid on the back of his / her's neck. The safe zone is 3.8mm, our little one has a measurement of 4.3mm of fluid at the back of the neck. We were not expecting this and it hit my like a tonne of bricks. The assistant asked me further questions and explained what would happen next but i couldn't breathe and my answers were muffled as i couldn't hold my tears back.

I got my bloods taken and the midwife explained that with my NT (nuchal translucency) was at 4.3mm my blood results would come back high risk so she recommended i have invasive treatment called CVS (chorionic villus sampling) which involves removing tissue from the placenta. CVS is used to detect chromosomal abnormalities such as DS (downs syndrome) or detect other conditions. The test gives you a clear indication if the baby has DS or not and the sex can be revealed. The down side is, there is a 1% chance of miscarriage when you have this operation.

We decided to go ahead with the CVS (chorionic villus sampling) as we would get a lot of questions answered sooner rather than later.

To add more heart ache to the situation, the midwife called me yesterday to say my blood results have came back with a high risk rate and the chances the little one would have DS would be 1 in 8. I went numb when i heard this, how could this be? DS doesn't run in either of our families, we're young, healthy, don't smoke - why was this happening to us?

I did my research to get a better understanding of what was happening. I read a lot of women have came out with higher NT results than our little one, are older and some being told they had a 1 in 2 chance of their little having DS and turns out their baby's have turned out fine. It seems the majority of the time when the baby's have turned out to have DS is when it runs in the family.

I just don't know what to do. My mind is telling me to go for the test but my heart is telling me not to. I know there is only a 1 in 100 chance of having a miscarriage but that 1% is way too high of a risk for me, especially after seeing the little one moving around during the scan, i don't want nothing harming this baby. There is the option of having a 16 weeks anomaly scan which looks further into the structure of the baby and checks the baby's heart but you get that regardless if you have operation or not.

Like i said, we are both young, with healthy lifestyles. We do not smoke, don't do drugs, i don't drink now i'm pregnant and DS does not run in the family. The only thing holding us back is this 0.8mm of extra fluid on the baby's neck.
