The Truthspeaker, and Fundamental Manipulation

ON THE TRUTHSPEAKER PLANS

Nucharon's study of the Fundamental Plane was focused around the concept of altering the truth. Proper manipulation of the Fundamental Plane involved stating a lie as true, and forcing it onto the world. Nucharon's Truthspeaker effectively served as a semi-autonomous instrument for this. However, the Truthspeaker was not meant to be the instrument for the entire cosmos- a common misunderstanding.

The Truthspeaker, as per its name, "spoke" truths about the world, and made it so. The plan was for it to wipe the face of Urias bare, turning it into a perfect sphere orbiting in a perfect circle around the Sun. The Truthspeaker would then Speak onto the simple stone sphere, allowing it to manipulate the entire planet and turn it into essentially a more powerful Truthspeaker. From there, the Sun could be rewritten, and so on until eventually all the cosmos could be reshaped in perfect, simple order as per Nucharon's dream.

The Truthspeaker could not simply rewrite everything from the laboratory. A Fundamental manipulator is limited by its size and its target's complexity. The Truthspeaker could only rewrite a few mountains at first before needing to move to another location, but as Urias was remade, its range would grow to countries and continents and eventually the planet as everything simplified. With a planet-sized Truthspeaker, over a few years the Sun could be rewritten.

Each planned incarnation of the Truthspeaker was intended to carry along a computed essence of Nucharon. Nucharon personally recreated himself in the first one, as an independent control personality that could be given a physical form by Fundamental manipulation. The plan was to copy the personality again to the planet when it was rewritable, and the first Truthspeaker destroyed. Each Truthspeaker would carry Nucharon's mind, and he would plan each step up in scale.

ON FUNDAMENTAL MANIPULATION

It should be noted that "speaking" is generally loosely used. While Nucharon personally could rewrite the nearby world by stating how he wished it to be, actually talking is an inefficient method of Fundamental manipulation. Nucharon and Sophine could simply will things into form, while the Truthspeaker's lack of an independent mind meant that it relied on a planar wave system that clearly travelled to the target. This system was powerful on large scales, but weaker on smaller ones and could be countered by the (on average) much weaker Sophine.

In addition, the method of Fundamental manipulation affects the power of the results. Nucharon, as an experienced user, learned how to precisely alter truths directly. Sophine, before her voyage through the Fundamental Plane and bodily reconstruction, did not know these techniques and instead used the weaker method of property manipulation. If Nucharon wanted to stop a train, he could simply will that the unmoving train was reality, whereas Sophine would will that the train stop. Sophine did eventually learn Nucharon's methods, but it took years of work afterwards and a significant raw strength boost from her body being reconstructed from the Fundamental Plane up.

Character Bulletin: Nucharon

Nucharon, an eternal loner, is sad by nature, having been rejected, shunned, and feared by his own kind and equally depressed at having lost them. However, he is obsessed with forcing all the universe to follow his sets of patterns and cares little about anything else, to the point where his entire life is bent towards completing and activating the Truthspeaker. Nucharon could have been a hero once, but his society forced him into villainy and madness. Nucharon enjoys his own company most of all and rarely does anything without thought. He plans ahead and focuses on long term goals. However, he has a soft side. He is often melancholy and solemn, and still reminisces about the society that shunned him. Not that it gets in the way of his planning. Nucharon isn't quite evil. He has honest goals he feels are best for the world (even if they do require genocide). He is remorseful and contemplative, and frequently considers the morality of his actions. However, he isn't a hero. His goals still do involve the end of all life, and he does kidnap Sophine upon finding her in his lab (though he treats her well). But Nucharon is not a complete monster, just opposed to nearly everyone. Nucharon struggles to deal with and get over his past, with his emotions getting in the way of his logic sometimes. In addition, Nucharon's focus on long term plans often leads him to neglect some short term matters, making him an awful caretaker. He also faces the fact that everyone is opposed to his goals. But then, they're not nigh-omniscient fanatic planar engineers. Nucharon is mot one for friends and socializing, but when Sophine is present, he does enjoy having someone to talk to. He can be kind and charming, but always stays a little distant and cold. For her part, Sophine actually somewhat likes him- but not enough to not try escaping. Always an engineer, Nucharon's primary field of study is planar technology. While this is a difficult field, he has had a LOT of time to perfect his work. As a result, he has mastered a Time Engine, created a Fundamental Portal which he uses for study, built the Truthspeaker, and even managed to imbue himself with the Fundamental Plane. All of it is designed to further his goal of building the world in an ultimate pattern. The Last Progenitor is tall, statuesque even, at exactly six feet. His hair is dark brown, short, and tends to stick up. He keeps a slight stubble, and has many, many scars. His eyes are sharp and piercing, but look very, very old. Because he is. He generally wears robes of his own fashioning, which are simple and practical. His voice is deep, cultured, slow and emotional, reminiscent of the age of the Progenitors. Nucharon can often be found lost in thought at the peak of his mountain, staring at the polar snows. When not, he’s in his laboratory or foundry, assembling or testing some part of the Truthspeaker. Thanks to the Polar Winds, it’s hard to tell day and night, so he simply sleeps when tired. Nucharon was born an idealistic child in Ahünal, but was considered disabled by society even though he didn't feel like he was. He didn't want pity but equality, and eventually became cynical. The Progenitors feared him due to his talent for technology, and that led to him becoming a recluse in a hidden workshop. It was stormed, however, and frozen in time for eons. The buildup of time eventually wormed its way into Nucharon's mind, and he awoke after the Moment of Chaos obsessed with forcing patterns on the world. Eventually, his work and Sophine's interference led to him becoming trapped in the Fundamental Plane. Perhaps if another portal opened, he could one day escape, but for all intents and purposes, the Progenitors had come to an end.

Urias Daily Facts 47 and 48

47. Eclipses bring about unusual magic effects. The alignment of celestial objects creates a natural se Vanlie effect, causing a powerful beam of magic focused on Urias that affects magic fields across the planet (and interacting especially interestingly with moonstone). Certain effects are much easier to cause under a solar or lunar eclipse, and some can only be achieved under eclipses, making them valuable opportunities in magic. 48. Nucharon's Truthspeaker had a semi-sentient artificial intelligence developed by Nucharon personally. This intelligence was designed to focus on intelligent use of the Fundamental Plane and protect itself. However, it also had Nucharon's mind attached, so that either the automatic intelligence or Nucharon could control the Truthspeaker (or a Fundamental construct inside it). These were also somewhat independent, as Nucharon's mind survived the Fundamental Plane while the AI did not.
