The argument for nuclear energy may be a difficult one after the recent tsunamis and earthquakes in Japan and the meltdown of the nuclear reactors in Japan. However, we must not simply discard this valuable source of energy simply because of fear. For far too long society has based its decisions on fear and not facts, but we have the power to change this. Nuclear energy is by far the most, if not one of the most, efficient forms of energy currently available. At the San Diego Science Festival I spoke with some scientists from the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant who informed me that a small pellet (about the size of a bean) produced 149 barrels of oil or about 17,000 cubic meters of natural gas. The scientists also informed me that the plant in Japan that had a meltdown was from the 60s and was about to be retired because it was so old. Although the claims of these scientists may be corrupted in the minds of the readers of this because they work in the nuclear field we must keep in mind that their duty as scientists is to present the facts as they are. For these reasons we must keep using Nuclear Energy in the future along with other alternative sources of energy which do not damage the environment.
