Typography Tuesday
This week we present typographic sample pages from American illustrator, type designer, and book historian Warren Chappell ‘s 1935 book on type-design theory The Anatomy of Lettering, printed at the Golden Hind Press in Madison, New Jersey for the New York publisher Loring & Mussey. The book is dedicated to Chappell’s teacher and mentor, the great German type designer Rudolf Koch, who had died the year before. The text focuses on design developed from practiced hand work. The publishers note that “The reader will emerge from the study or The Anatomy of Lettering not as a restricted mechanical copyist bur as an original and versatile letterer.”
Shown here are pen-drawn Roman and italic letters; alphabets set in Koch’s Kabel (designed 1927-29) and Neuland (designed 1922/23) types, representing single-stroke and block letters; blackletter or Gothic letters in their Fraktur form; a set of Rotunda-style Gothic.
This book is another donation from our friend Jerry Buff, a prolific collector of fine press and fine publishing, and books on books.
