the stanford prison experiment isn't a good example to use because it was tainted by the fact that all the students already knew what their professors expected of them, and wanted a good grade so they did that.

I think that might make it an even better example. Not only did good people do a bad thing when offered power. They couldn’t resist the motivation of self interest (a good grade) to restrain themselves. 

So if you have a gun, not only do you have to resist the power of solving your problems easily, you have to resist using a weapon to further your own self interest.

As flawed as the study may have been, abuse of power is a constant theme in human nature with many examples throughout all of history. 

I guess I chose the SPE because I was very tired and it was an easy choice to demonstrate my point. I will try to find something a bit more bulletproof next time.

@nuggetemily: They are coming with me, just not today. I don't want to bring them into a house that's still being unpacked; that would be unnecessary stress on them. I'm getting them Monday if everything goes to plan.

whoa! when did turtle happen?

Turtles technically happened two years ago when I got my job at this college -- part of my job description was caring for the turtles -- but it wasn’t until about four months ago that I learned how to actually care for them properly. Since then I’ve been doing my best to get them what they need after years and years of borderline neglect. We’re still short some of the supplies needed to provide even minimal acceptable care, but this represents a dramatic improvement in their quality of life.

Yes, I’m aware. It was addressed in the show. Sam Phillips wanted a white boy who could sing like “the negroes on the radio” because that was the music teens were into and you couldn’t sell records to respectable white families featuring a black person on the cover. He found it in Elvis. And it worked and Elvis rolled with it, for better or worse. 

So yeah, racism is very probably why men didn’t pick up the moves at the time even though they worked so well for Elvis. My question was less a question and more of a lament that men still don’t dance. Why don’t I see men at the club shaking their asses like women do? It’s a damn shame.
