the stanford prison experiment isn't a good example to use because it was tainted by the fact that all the students already knew what their professors expected of them, and wanted a good grade so they did that.
I think that might make it an even better example. Not only did good people do a bad thing when offered power. They couldn’t resist the motivation of self interest (a good grade) to restrain themselves.
So if you have a gun, not only do you have to resist the power of solving your problems easily, you have to resist using a weapon to further your own self interest.
As flawed as the study may have been, abuse of power is a constant theme in human nature with many examples throughout all of history.
I guess I chose the SPE because I was very tired and it was an easy choice to demonstrate my point. I will try to find something a bit more bulletproof next time.
