so, re: the drama going on in the ffxiv community right now:

i handled the situation poorly on many levels. i wanted to believe j was innocent so badly because i liked and respected him as an artist and a comic writer. his comic was the inspiration for me starting my own comic, and i looked up to him as an inspiration for my art.

i see now that, by defending his actions, i was doing no one any favors. the original interaction seemed innocent enough, just a mistake on his part. but when he started doubling down, making it about him and his own trauma, rather than the people's he had hurt, and then started talking shit about other people...well, the situation got out of hand.

i still don't think it's right to bully him and talk about him behind his back and insult his art and take his words out of context, etc., but that is a small number of people compared to how it felt.

j has hurt a large number of people and won't back down from his position, and that's inexcusable. as long as he refuses to apologize, refuses to step back from the mess he has cause, i will no longer support him or put his art on your dashes.

i'm very sorry for the pain i've caused.

if you ever think your comment or like on something doesn't matter, just know that, even when people have a lot of likes/comments on something, they can fall into a trap of "nobody likes this" when they don't receive any feedback for a while, or even a "people used to like this but now they don't."

this morning, i fell into this trap with my webcomic because the views on each successive page have fallen since the first one, and the overall enthusiasm i had hoped for never came. but then i went to my stats page anyway, and it turned out i got another 5 star rating, another sub, AND another comment while i was lamenting.

things i need to remember:

four whole people liked it enough to leave a 5 star rating

three whole people want to be informed when it updates

i have an incredibly dedicated commenter who comments on every page (thank you, @aywren!!)

i have a cover and three pages uploaded right now. i'm still setting the scene. of course it isn't exciting yet.

i'm not doing this to be popular and cool. i'm doing this because i like to draw and i've never told a story in this medium before.

some people, like myself!!, "save up" webcomics before reading them so that they can read a bunch of pages together

but anyway, i just wanted to say that that little bit of interaction was enough to cheer me up. even though i AM doing this for myself, to become a better artist and to try something new, it's really nice to hear that other people like my stuff. it IS a lot of effort for literally NO money, so it's nice that people appreciate it.
