It was Joe’s second gotcha day on 1st August - we were away on his first ever holiday so didn’t manage to do a celebratory post til now! We went and stayed in a little cottage by the sea in Pembrokeshire and, aside from being a bit unsettled the first evening (he loves his routine), he was amazingly chilled and well-behaved the whole time. He slept the whole two and a half hours in the car, loved the hustle and bustle of the harbour and the bonus was that being by the sea it was much cooler, so he was much more sprightly than he has been at home lately. He actually sulked a bit when we came home, and refused to jump out of the boot of the car on our first ‘at home’ walk as though to say ‘no, let’s go further again!’.
I took him for his lepto booster at the end of July and he’d put on a kilogram since February, when he was at his worst with the B12/pancreatic enzyme issues - so very happy about that. The vet said his teeth were fine and good for a 5-year old greyhound, though there’s a bit of plaque showing in a couple of places now - but his gums are healthy. Oh and he didn’t make a sound getting his jab (he’s never done the scream of death at the vets, thank god) but he did make such a fuss in the waiting room because someone came in with a Jack Russell and a French Bulldog, and he was scared of them - he can be very vocal when he wants you to hurry the hell up and get out of somewhere!
Speaking of being scared of other dogs, we actually met three other greyhounds today - the first time I’ve bumped into anyone else with greyhounds in the whole two years I’ve had him - and lo and behold, he was nervous around them too. I thought he might go ‘ahh, I know what these are!’, but no. I get confused by his body language in those situations because he pulls to get close to other dogs, but then he stands stiffly and wags his tail quickly and does whale eye - so I know he’s not comfortable at all, but sort of excited at the same time? Obviously I try to avoid greetings where possible, but sometimes you just can’t stop it in time. I really do think he must’ve been separated from his litter/mum too young or something because he has zero idea of what the hell other dogs are and how the hell to behave around them. I’ve never ever seen him play bow to another dog, which is kind of sad, but if he was good with other dogs he’d be like the absolute perfect dog in every way, and that seems like asking too much! It doesn’t matter - I love him to bits and truth be told I’m not much of a person-lover, so we’re a pair together.
(Sorry we’ve not been around much on Tumblr lately, I got a bit social-media-jaded, but I’ve still been reading all your posts!)
