N is for Nûñnë'hï - Immortal spirit people from Cherokee mythology, they only appear to humans when they allow themselves to be seen. When they do appear, they look and act just like other Cherokee. They love music and dancing, however, if you go near when they are playing, the music will shift about and suddenly seem to be coming from behind you or from some other direction.

Cryptid of the Day: Nûñnë’hï

Description: Also known as Yunwi Tsundi, the Nûñnë’hï are an immortal race of spirit people in Cherokee mythology. They live underground in caves scattered throughout Appalachia, where hunters could hear them singing and dancing echoing through the mountains. The European equivalent of the Nûñnë'hï are fairies.

The Nunnehi are The People Who Live Anywhere. Spirit people who lived in the highlands of Cherokee country, liking bald mountain peaks. Only seen when they let themselves be seen, they looked and acted like other people. If you try to follow the sounds of their songs and drums, the sound will seem to shift and come from a different directions. They can even look and act like people you know.

The Nûñnë'hï are an immortal race of beings known to the Native American Cherokees. Their name literally translates to “The People Who Live Anywhere”, but according to Cherokee folklore, the Nûñnë'hï had many underground townhouses throughout the southern Appalachian Mountains; they were particularly fond of high-mountain peaks, where no timber grew.

These american equivalents of european ‘fairies’ would often play music, singing and dancing and beating drums in the mountains that hunters would hear. However, once those hunters came close to the sound, the source of the music would inexplicably shift as if coming from behind them, or from a different direction.

A long time ago, someone once asked me about North American fairies, and whether working with them would be different than working with, say, the Brownies, the Sidhe, the Seelie and Unseelie Courts of Great Britain and Ireland.

I can now say that working with the Immortals of North American would be greatly different, in the sense that: you would not be working with them. From what limited knowledge I’ve gathered, they come to you. Whether to play or prank or help, they seem to choose to come to you by their will alone.

There are countless stories of the Nûñnë'hï both existing with and assisting the Cherokee people, one of the most well-known stories being about how they fought alongside the Cherokee when their land was invaded by a powerful, unknown tribe of Native Americans from the southeast, at Nikwasi. Another being the many ways these Immortals aided Cherokee people by inviting them to live with them in the mountains to escape the genocide and relocation they would inevitable be forced to endure.

Of course, these are not the only kinds of Fae living in America. There must be thousands of stories and mythologies spanning countless generations of Native Americans. 

The Immortals are bound to the people of America as the the Fae are intrinsically tied to land of the British Isles. As a UK native, I have absolutely no authority on advising how to act in the presence of the many, many races of Fae that inhabit America, but I implore each and every one of you to look up and explore the enrapturing and incredible stories the internet supplies on the American Fairies.
