Need some advice

Nurses of tumblr, has there ever been a time when you questioned whether you had made the right decision when you chose to become a nurse? I’ve been questioning myself lately. I feel like I did make a good choice, like nursing is the only thing I wanted to do, and other nurses say I’m miles ahead of where they were when they first started as nurses, and I always hear that I’m a good nurse, but I don’t know. Perhaps it’s a feeling that all new nurses get.

How do you cope with that? Should I move jobs?

You know as a nurse, I'm really not phased by patients that are rude or needy or just heavy. I like to think I'm pretty understanding and it just doesn't bother me. But I absolutely cannot deal with patients that belittle me and treat me like I don't know what I'm doing.

First patient I ever snapped at was doing just that, and I'm sure I'll get my ass handed to me in leadership rounds today and hell, probably disciplinary action. But like. There's a difference between advocating for yourself and just being a c*nt.

I get annoyed when certain Nurses label our babies' parents as "needy". Yes, there are times when parents seek attention and are inconsiderate of the demands we are juggling, and that no, we can not take 2 minutes to do something like give their baby a pacifier which is something they are completely capable and allowed to do. However, a parent needing reassurance that their baby's seemingly bad day is not a further sign of a deteriorating condition is not being "needy". Wanting to hear that you can demonstrate that you know their baby's needs is not "needy". Calling twice a shift to hear if there has been any changes is not "needy". Spending hours at their baby's bedside longing for the moment when they will be finally able to hold their child is not "needy". Family-centered care relies on the welcoming attitude of parent participation and involvement no matter how much stress and strain it causes to also incorporate extra teaching and care for the parents as much as their infant who is our patient. These same nurses who pass along such sentiment are often also the ones who judge the parents who never visit and seem uninterested in the status of their babies. As a Nurse who spent much of her weekend managing parental expectations and talking to a parent who was dissatisfied (justly) with the care their baby had received, I know that we can do better.
