So I asked my nurse Stu to take a photo of me and Paige after our day of Christmas 🎄 shopping 🛍 last Friday, and he said sure, as long as we could have a photo too! Nurses are amazing people. Stu is especially amazing. He’s like everyone’s dad here at LMC! He’s kind, patient, caring, and really funny; except when he’s telling his terrible Dad Jokes! Stu was looking after me when I had sepsis last weekend. He was there for the particularly long and horrible spasm that lasted three hours of Saturday morning. It was only the second spasm he’s ever seen, so he did spectacularly well! There was a new nurse working with Stu. He explained to her the hardest part of their job “when a clients like this, it’s really hard... because I’m the one who makes the decision whether we’re ringing an ambulance or not. I’m the one who decides if we can ride this out, or if we can’t. When she can’t breathe like this, it’s a very fine line to walk. And it’s horrible there’s nothing you can do to ease her suffering. I can’t give her any more medication... all you can do is be there. You can’t stop the pain. So that’s all you can do; just be there.” And Stu was. For those entire three hours, he held my hand and talked with me (as did the other nurse, Perdy, and my carer Paige). He told me funny stories. He monitored my breathing and went to fetch more oxygen. He stopped me from dislocating my ankle when it go stuck on the side of the bed. And when he told me to try and think about something happy, he didn’t get offended when I gave him the famous Amy-claire Bitch Face, he didn’t get offended 😂 tough man! Basically, he was a top nurse and a top guy. Nurses are amazing; they literally keep people alive. And they also spend a whole lotta time making our lives worth living... bringing light to dark days, laughter to sad ones, and kindness to bad ones.
