Eggnog

Short lil bemily ficlet i wrote based on a prompt i saw, “did you just pour eggnog on your cheerios?” read below or an ao3

“Did you just pour eggnog on your Cheerios?”

The morning after their Christmas party, Beca woke up in an empty bed. This was not unusual, as her girlfriend woke up before her most days, but after a minute of sleepy thought and scrolling through her phone, Beca did think it was surprising. Their party had been what the kids call ‘lit’, and Emily had definitely had gotten into the festive mood by downing glass after glass of Beca’s spiked eggnog.

Beca was kind of shocked her lightweight girlfriend wasn’t glued to her pillow and moaning about a hangover.

She rolled out of bed, shivering as her bare feet touched the chilly hardwood floor. Yawning, she made her way out of the bedroom and into the kitchen, where she was greeted with a cheerfully whistled rendition of ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ while Emily poured herself a bowl of cereal.

Beca paused, lingering in the doorway and appreciating the way Emily’s bedhead still managed to look messily stylish. As she watched, Emily set down the box of Cheerios and grabbed the milk.

Or what she perhaps thought was milk, but Beca noticed, to her increasing horror as it sploshed over the cereal, was actually the pitcher of heavily spiked eggnog from the fridge. She wanted to warn Emily, but it seemed she had momentarily lost the power of speech. Just as Emily went to take a bite, she gained it back.

“Did you just pour eggnog on your Cheerios?!”

Emily jumped and a few Cheerios hopped off of her spoon and back into the bowl. “Jesus, you scared me,” she breathlessly laughed. “Good morning.”

“Good morning.” Beca stepped up to the kitchen table and tapped her fingers on the pitcher of eggnog. “You didn’t get enough last night? You’re really having eggnog with your Cheerios?”

Emily frowned over at the pitcher. “What?”

“Eggnog. Cheerios. In your bowl?”

Slowly, Emily blinked at the eggnog. “Wait, that’s eggnog? I thought it was milk.”

“Why would we have plain milk in a pitcher instead of in its jug?”

“I… don’t know?” Emily grinned sheepishly. “Maybe you broke it?”

“Emily.”

Emily pouted. “Well how was I supposed to know?”

Beca’s mouth fell open. “Because you drank about four glasses of the stuff last night! You were totally wasted, dude!”

“Yeah, but…” Emily gave her a sappy look. “That’s because you kept bringing it to me when I asked. I never got it for myself.”

“Okay, still!”

“Do you think it tastes good?” Emily pondered her cereal. Then, before Beca could stop her, she took a bite. 

Beca gaped. “Dude!”

Emily chewed slowly, nodding to herself. “Wow, disgusting.” 

“Disgusting?”

“Oh, yeah,” Emily said, spooning another bite into her mouth. “Totally revolting actually.”

“Stop eating it!”

Emily yanked the bowl away from Beca’s interfering hand. “No! Can’t waste perfectly good Cheerios. Or perfectly good eggnog.”

Beca just stared as Emily continued to eat the Cheerios. Eventually she shook her head with a smile. “You’re something else, Em.”

“Yeah, but you love me.” Emily puckered her lips and Beca rolled her eyes, but dutifully leaned down and gave her girlfriend a kiss.

“Yeah.” She scrunched her nose. “Let me try.”

Emily grinned and held a spoonful of spiked Cheerios up to Beca’s mouth. 

As soon as they touched her tongue, Beca grimaced. “Ew, that’s disgusting.”

“Totally revolting.”

“i’m ready for this to end. tonight.”

beca says the words and emily’s heart drops. it must fall all the way to her stomach because she suddenly feels like she might throw up.

next to her, chloe has gone still and silent. they’ve just watched beca kill a girl, and now, her face bathed in shadow, she looks almost like she was made of darkness

it’s nighttime in the arena, but outside of chloe’s window, the sun beats down on district 7 with a fury, making emily sweat. or maybe that’s just the look on beca’s face, foreign and skeletal

emily’s stomach turns and she chokes back the urge to throw up

they creep into the city, one after the other, using the flashlight emily had asked for, pooling the money of everyone she could in the square to help their victor. she didn’t get much, but she got enough it seemed, because just three hours after she handed it over at the city building with a message, she watched beca climb down from that tree, the flashlight in her hands

emily just hopes she didn’t catalyze some sort of suicide mission

when the screen splits four ways, emily nearly faints

in one corner, beca standing still and quiet as she peeks around the corner of a skyscraper, flicking the flashlight on and off

in another corner, amy and benji creeping through the city

in the third corner, the district 1 tributes hiding out

and in the last corner, the boy with the tracker jacker stings, somehow still in the games, slinking up behind beca, mouth twisted in an evil grin

when he puts the knife to beca’s skin, emily gasps out a sob

chloe’s hand squeezes her wrist so tight she cant feel her fingers

and then -- chaos

emily almost can’t follow it all, it happens so fast

bumper keeling over, dead by benji’s sword

benji on the ground, pieter smug above him

the horrible beasts, finally shown on the camera, with their twisted whiskers and floppy ears and terrible eyeless faces

they chase down the tributes, one after the other and emily thinks, this is it, this is how beca dies, cornered in a closet... but then she’s safe, the mutt turning away

and then again, emily thinks, beca will die, her neck snapped the same way benji’s was, but then -- no, beca wriggles out from under the lifeless body of the district 1 boy.

and again, emily can’t breathe, fights back nausea, watches beca trapped on the ground, mutts hovering over her... and then they’re not, then they’re following amy away and it’s just beca left, just beca and kommissar, wrestling on the ground

beca, weaponless and tiny, and emily’s stomach roils, it twists, she can’t breathe

she wonders if the capitol can manipulate the speed of live television on their screens, wonders if they slow it down or if emily’s heart is going so fast that everything else seems much slower

she watches as beca wiggles the flashlight from her waistband, flashing it in kommissar’s eyes. the large girl shrieks, and beca rolls, grabbing the tiny knife she used to kill pieter. she thrusts it into kommissar’s back, an embrace that happens at half-speed

kommissar spurts a mouthful of blood into beca’s face and goes limp

then everything is silent, the camera zooming in on beca

she slumps into the ground, her cheeks caked with dirt and blood so thick it’s nearly black

she’s visibly shaking, breathing ragged and weak

but there’s something in her expression, some terrible thrill, some horrible triumph and emily, through her fear, her nausea, her own quiet turmoil, wonders...

“Ladies and Gentlemen! I am pleased to announce the winner of the Sixty-Eighth Annual Hunger Games! Your victor, of District 7, Beca Mitchell!”

tears run down beca’s cheeks as she stares blankly into space, directly into an invisible camera, and her lips twitch minutely, a ghost of a smile, one that says relief and shock and -- emily wonders.... a victorious satisfaction

that’s when finally, after, everything, emily throws up

it’s the three year anniversary of northwest mansion mystery and a day after the two year anniversary of the end of gravity falls

Doodled the lumberjack from NWMM a few weeks ago and now decided to line him. I have a habit of focusing too much on really minor characters, so he’ll most likely make a comeback soon.
