AThe Panorama of the City of New York at Queens Museum was conceived by Robert Moses for the 1964 World's Fair. Some other proposals of his, which never got built, were recently on display in the Panorama, including the Brooklyn-Battery Bridge (instead of the tunnel which ended up built) and decked housing developments over unbuilt highways in Lower Manhattan. One inch on the model is equivalent to 100 feet, and all 320 square miles of NYC were built into the work of art with the accuracy of 895K buildings (built prior to the latest comprehensive update in 1992). Originally, a lighting cycle illuminated the model and highlighted civic projects and urban infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, libraries, courthouses, firehouses, police precincts, public housing, and even utilities. It took years for the model to be originally built, based on aerial photography, maps, and other materials. #nyc #queens #queensmuseum #nycpanorama #panorama #panoramanyc #model #architecture #urbandesign #museum #cities #urbanplanning #development #robertmoses #nycsecrets #secretsofnyc #unbuiltnyc #infrastructure #art #transportationplanning #publictransit #publictransport #urbanhistory #history #bridges #tunnels https://www.instagram.com/p/CW4ADdZriN5/?utm_medium=tumblr
