One of a few bean bag “pillows” tossed into the audience by the band Silly Pillows at the 1997 New York Popfest.
Given that a digital version of this character shows up on the web site for the band Silly Pillows, I guess you could call this its mascot? Though at the time I acquired it, I wasn’t even familiar with the band.
I was in the audience at the second night of the New York Popfest (no relation to the more recent iteration) at Fez when Silly Pillows took the stage, all sparkling pop and manic energy. Frontman Jonathan Caws-Elwitt bounded about the stage, occasionally tossing these little pillow-shaped bean bags into the audience...
And I caught one!
Mr. Pillow sports plush blue velour on the back and simple white cotton with a drawn-on face on the front. A fitting artifact of the 90s indiepop scene.
