Humans of NYC Stellar Farmers Markets: Anthony Gordon

Following in his father’s footsteps, Jamaica native Anthony Gordon began farming 15 years ago upon arriving in the states. Operating out of Terhune Orchards in Salt Point, N.Y., Gordon makes the two-hour trip each Friday during the summer to the GrowNYC Corona Greenmarket.

Gordon says his favorite thing about being a farmer is interacting with people and hearing about different cultures. The weekly Stellar Farmers Market demos have allowed Gordon to develop lasting relationships with his customers, as he always recommends the best fruits based on someone’s personal preference and even their health.

“It gives people the opportunity to sit in on the class, and at the end of it, they receive a Health Bucks coupon and they come and spend it,” Gordon says. “They ask me which fruits will be best suitable for the recipe, and I will offer my opinion.”

Humans of NYC Stellar Farmers Markets

Hop off the 7 train at Corona Plaza on Fridays in the summer and fall, and you’ll see the GrowNYC Corona Greenmarket. Under a tent, a group listens intently to a nutrition lesson and cooking demo.

That’s one of our Stellar Farmers Market food demos, which promote healthier food choices in low-income neighborhoods. The workshops, conducted in English, Spanish and Chinese, provide nutrition education to New Yorkers at 20 local farmers markets from July through November.

Each week, Stellar Market staff offer step-by-step cooking demos that show you how to make simple, healthy recipes that use fresh ingredients you can buy that day at the market. Whether you’re interested in the carrot raisin salad, apple and pear stir-fry, black bean and sweet potato stew or broccoli chickpea dip, options abound for everyone!

Participants receive a $2 Health Bucks coupon that can be used toward the purchase of fruits and vegetables at the market, including the fresh produce used during the workshop.

We recently shared the stories and experiences of New Yorkers who participate in our Stellar Farmers Market demos at the GrowNYC Corona Greenmarket. The workshops, which promote healthier food choices in low-income neighborhoods, are held weekly from July through November at 20 local farmers markets.

Patricia visits the GrowNYC Corona Greenmarket each week to attend the Stellar Farmers Market workshop. Recently at the market, she used Health Bucks coupons to buy all the ingredients she needed to make our carrot raisin salad.

“I come to enjoy the nutrition and learn about how to do the recipe,” she says. “There’s a lot of fresh vegetables; everything is fresh!”

Humans of NYC Stellar Farmers Markets: Ana Angel

Originally from Mexico, Ana Angel has operated Angel Family Farm in Goshen, N.Y., for the past 12 years. Each Friday from July through November, she sets up at the GrowNYC Corona Greenmarket, which features our Stellar Farmers Market food demos.

“After the Stellar Markets staff educate people on how to cook the recipes, they come after the workshop to buy my vegetables,” she says.

For attending the workshops, participants receive a $2 Health Bucks coupon, which they can use to buy Angel’s produce.

“It’s a pleasure for us when I see people buying healthy foods for their families,” she says.

Humans of NYC Stellar Farmers Markets: Pamela Cando

Pamela Cando is a nutritionist for our Stellar Farmers Market program. Each week at the GrowNYC Corona Greenmarket, she leads educational cooking demos of healthy recipes that include fresh ingredients from the market.

“I like the feedback that we get from the participants,” Cando says. “They ask questions, they share their recipes and they want to get more information. We answer the questions with basic nutrition tips that they can understand and practice. They’re open to getting more tips so they can add more fruits and vegetables to their diet.”

After the demo, participants receive a Health Bucks coupon, which can be used to buy fresh produce at the market.

“It’s part of the community and the dynamic of coming to the farmers market,” says Cando. “They can stop by the workshop, get their coupon for fruits and veggies, have a sample and learn a little bit.”

Humans of NYC Stellar Farmers Markets: Tony

Many of our Stellar Farmers Market food demos are offered in English, Spanish and Chinese, which ensures participants learn important nutritional info in their native language. Tony, who speaks English but is a native Chinese speaker, is grateful for the translations while attending the demos each week at the GrowNYC Corona Greenmarket.

“Every time we come here we learn something about nutrition and healthy food,” he says. “It’s very educational. They teach us about the recommended percent intake for each food in our diet. All this information is very important to our health.”

Tony has been coming to the market for four years, and each time he uses the Health Bucks coupon he receives from the demo to buy fresh produce at the market for his favorite recipes.

“My family only eats vegetables,” he says. “The fruits and vegetables are very fresh. They don’t store them in a refrigerator; it’s coming right from the farmer.”

Humans of NYC Stellar Farmers Markets: Laura Casaregola

“Corona is a really great, fun market,” says Laura Casaregola, operations and promotions manager at the GrowNYC Corona Greenmarket. “A lot of families come here to get their weeks’ worth of groceries, so that’s really great to see.”

On Fridays in the summer, Casaregola stays very busy at the market, thanks in part to the popularity our Stellar Farmers Market food demos. Participants learn helpful nutrition tips and receive a Health Bucks coupon that they can use to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. Each week features a new healthy recipe that incorporates the seasonal fruits and vegetables available at the market.

“Every week they have the incentive to come and learn something new and get a coupon,” Casaregola says. “People are specifically coming out to the market because they know Stellar is here.”
