#DidYouKnow that all NYCT buses have stickers indicating the bus depot that they belong to? There are 29 bus depots to house the MTA’s fleet of 5,700 buses throughout the five boroughs. Eight of the depots serve MTA Bus, while the other 21 depots serve MTA New York City Transit Bus. MTA Bus is the result of a merger of 7 private bus companies and MTA New York City Transit Bus is comprised of all of the public bus routes within the city.

When commuting via the NYC subway system, the letters and numbers used to mark train routes aren’t particularly indicative of the destination of each train line itself. However, what you may not know is that this does not remain true for #NYC bus routes. NYC bus routes are labeled with a number and a letter that signifies the borough that the bus route primarily operates within!

The letters used to mark each bus are as follows:

B for Brooklyn, BX for Bronx, M for Manhattan, Q for Queens and S for Staten Island. X signifies an express bus, like the X27 and express routes into Manhattan are labeled as BXM from the Bronx, QM from Queens, and BM from Brooklyn. Additionally, numbers on major Manhattan bus routes generally indicate the crosstown street that the bus runs along. For example, the M42 route operates primarily via 42nd St and the M14 route serves 14th street.
