Matador de Toros, by Jaan Kristjan Utno. Inspired by the wonderful woman who presses my cross-walk button every morning half past 8 in the morning, weekdays.
Who is the DoP?
It has been a CRAZY week. I will get into more of what's happened in multiple posts. Brace yourselves!
I am learning heaps about the film industry, and we have already gotten down to actually the specifics of what a Director of Photography does. I had no idea the responsibility the DP has on set and in preproduction. There are many department heads in a production: Director, Producer, Director of Photography, Art Department, Script, Sound, Editor. They in hand have their own team under them, and the DP has the largest team. Firstly the DP and the Director have to have a strong relationship - we work in tandem to create and bring to life the vision of the Director. When we have the idea complete, the concept along with storyboards, we start our work. We are in charge of the Camera department, the Electric department, and the Grip department, each who have their own heads of department and minions. This means that we tell our operator what we want on footage and how we want it. We work together with assistants to make the shot and bring it to life. To bring things to life, we need light, which requires electricity. The electric department is run by Gaffer, who provides us with electricity and multiple light choices. These guys are important, so that we don't get electrocuted on the set. To bring all the lighting choices and shot choices we want to life, we also have the Grip department, run by the Key Grip. The Key Grip organizes his team to make the impossible possible, shaping the light exactly how we need and want it, and providing different means of securing lights, as well as helping us with heavier camera movements with a dolly track or with various car mounts (search YouTube for the camera car they built for the Transformers highway scene). This is the team that makes the magic happen in front of the camera. This is the team that I will be running, keeping on their toes, and hopefully not firing for negligence. Each team is massive, except for the Camera department. Camera reports directly to the DP. In smaller shoots, the DP will also operate the camera, but on larger budget shoots, the DP has an operator. After this, we have the 1st Assistant Camera, whose sole purpose is to stay with the camera, and when shooting, pull focus (that means focus consistently and professionally during a shot). They also advise the DP at times when called upon. The 1st AC also has their own assistant, called (you may have guessed it) the 2nd Assistant Camera! This guys is the underling and minion of the 1st AC. They load the film or media, keep track of inventory, run for lenses and filters, place tape markers for the actors, and slates the camera (that cool clapper board with all the numbers and shoot information on it). In certain circumstances, there are more people, like the Digital Imaging Technician who does live color correction, and the Loader whose sole job is loading and reloading and securing film and/or media drives.
Heavy shit, amirite? The industry is massive, and if you mess up once, you generally do not have a chance to mess up a second time, because you will most likely get fired on large paid productions. The best rise to the top, everyone else will do other jobs. I intend on retiring at 35 for financial purposes, so that I can shoot films without worrying about how I'll pay for gas, my apartment or food. I intend to make it, and make it big - my future and my life depends on it.
Second first time
So for a quick update on this platform, I'm back. Expect things from this and my other blogs, those of you who still follow me. I have been accepted into the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles. I have been here for a month, and have a place to call home with my sweet little bundle of female. My school starts on the first of October but we have orientation this and next week, getting to know the school, area, the curriculum and all the perks and possible dangers. Today I passed an accuplacer test in English with scores of 98 and 105 (not entirely sure about maximums, hoping max is 110/120). On Monday we're at the Warner Bros theatre for all types of things. Tuesday we have a school party and dinner on the set that Back to the Future was filmed on, which has by now burned down multiple times. Wednesday is more orientation and Thursday is the first official day of lectures. I feel exhilaration every time my mind wanders to school matters. I can't wait. And I'll be reporting every step of the way, in hopes of developing my skills in written storytelling. You can whine, bitch and moan, and if you have any feedback, you know where to contact me(twitter/instagram/ask)! Let the documented adventure of UTNO conquering the States begin!
Semester two of school has officially started, it's gonna be intense this time around 🙊
