Day Two

With another busy day ahead, a slight sleep in was in order after the mammoth day that was yesterday.

Our first show was a new Australian Musical by Luke Byrne, it was on as part of the New York Musical Festival at Theatre Row. The story was about two yong girls whose parents were going through a divorce and were staying with their grandmother in a small beach town.

Upon hearing about a mother and daughters mysterious disappearance the eldest daughter seeks out some answers finally discovering that they were trapped in a cave that is covered by the tide. This was a really beautiful story and score, the minimalist production really highlighted the clever script and let the difference Musical styles resonate with the different characters and moments in the story.

Heading to the Public Theatre swiftly for a 1pm matinee of Fire In Dreamland, a play based around the fire at Coney Island framed in a relationship between a filmmaker and a woman he met on the boardwalk. It was a beautiful story using a clapper board to break the narrative as if into different takes of the same scene.

After another hurried trip back up to broadway we arrived just on time for show three of the day. Mean Girls, and boy was it good. I was really blown away by this, every aspect of this production worked, the book was strong and different enough from the movie as to not be stale. The cast were slick as anything, the chore was amazing, and committed to whatever they were doing, the songs are really strong and the reprises, which aren’t on the album, really added an extra aspect to the characters. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this performance with standout Taylor Louderman who plays Regina George absolutely slaying every time she was onstage.

Our final show for the day was Once on this Island. I love this production so much, it is such a lovely score and story given such life by the cast performances and design of the show. Again I left with sand in my shoes, and absolutely loved every moment of this performance. It is such a joyful piece of theatre.

On our way back to the hotel we went through Times Square strolling through the crowds, checking out the night lights and some of the stores on the way.
