Yeah, I mean, if you want to make a darker and grittier sequel series that's your prerogative, but it definitely wasn't something I enjoyed. Despite the books being massive and a bunch of cloak and dagger stuff going on, I really don't remember much of what actually happened. It also annoyed me that compared to how big of a deal severing/separation was in the first series, it was a lot more commonplace in the sequel series. Finally just because you are doing a grown up darker and edgier series do you really need to have repeated scenes of sexual violence. Especially when Lyra gets nearly assaulted when she leaves the ~ civilized ~ West. Those scenes felt like they were mostly there for shock value.
