newamericanleaders.org In Anaheim, California, a previously undocumented Mexican American challenges the high-powered interests of the Disney Corporation to win a city council seat. In the Midwest, a thirty-something Muslim Somali American unseats a forty-four-year incumbent in the Minnesota house of representatives. These are some of the foreign-born, lower-income, and of-color Americans who have successfully taken on leadership roles in elected office despite xenophobia, political gatekeeping, and personal financial concerns. In accessible prose, #SayuBhojwani shines a light on the political, systemic, and cultural roadblocks that prevent government from effectively representing a rapidly changing America, and offers forward-thinking solutions on how to get rid of them. #PeopleLikeUs serves as a road map for the burgeoning democracy that has been a long time in the making: inclusive, multiracial, and unstoppable. #nyudc #dmvnessa #mydccool #igdc #walkwithlocals #newamericanleaders (at NYU Washington, DC) https://www.instagram.com/p/BqJAU4qFtDa/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1p2cdfaxavj69
What I ate in D.C. 😛😛😍😘
#1: Zatinya: Mediterranean Food! I had hummus, falafel with tahini, Spanakopita, Haloumi and Cinnamon Pitza (not pictured), pistachio soda (Not pictured), Pita bread, and a chicken kebab.
#2: Captain Cookie and the Milkman: A place that makes freshly baked cookies and turns them into delicious cookie sandwiches! I had chocolate chip cookie with salted caramel and vanilla ice cream.
#3: Baked and Wired: The #1 cupcake joint in DC. YES, above Georgetown cupcakes, (apparently they’re not that great). Mine was a cherry cupcake in honor of the oh so beautiful DC Cherry Blossoms, and my friend had an incredible chocolate peanut butter one. I had a iced chai latte! TDF
#4: Daily Grill: I thought this place would be a bust, because it seemed to be kind of chain-like, but man was I wrong! DELICIOUS! My sandwhich and asparagus was from the healthy menu, but the mac n’ cheese was NOT. Hahahah. SO tasty. My friend’s dish was a french toast dish with raspberry compote. It came with a huge chunk of Monkey bread as well. (Like that was necessary, lol.)
#5: &Pizza: This was AWESOME!!! It’s like a chipotle for Pizza! $10 gets you a huge personal pizza that can be easily split between two. (That’s coming from me). There are different crusts, sauces, and toppings, and it is all unlimited for the same price. If I lived in DC, I don’t think you would get me out of that place.
A few shots from my trip around DC!
