Today’s Reflection
It is no accident that today is the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year in which the Church looks to a Radiant Dawn and new life as the days become longer and warmer. “It is as if God in His Wisdom, provided within [natures] framework ... lessons by which we might come to grasp something of his plan for our salvation.” This we see played out in the visitation in which Elizabeth greets Mary upon her arrival in the hill country of Judah. Because, Elizabeth the matriarch of old humbled herself as she exalted the new in Mary as the old ways began to decrease as the new way began to increase, much as the darkness of night gives way to light in the gift of new life. Thus on the day we say O Radiant Dawn, splendor of eternal light show us the sun of justice.
