43. the irish traditionsugawara 

the fridge is full of saltwater, and there’s an ocean full of nothing but breaking just outside the windows, and he wonders how on earth people build castles out of nothing but sand. but then again, he did fall in love with you. 

he remembers the first day, clear as lake water, the way your smile made his stomach burst with champagne bubble happiness, how your lashes made symphonies of all his heartstrings every time you blinked. how your fingers in his fit like the final click in a jigsaw puzzle before the whole thing falls apart, and maybe he should have known then that people who love in metaphors are always doomed to tragedy. 

you come home too late, and there’s an ocean on your lips. 

you kiss him with a sloppy smile and glazed-over eyes and he can taste the brine on his tongue. 

“where were you?” 

“oh you know, out.” 

“i see that.” 

you smile, and he feels his stomach sink, as if weighed down by all the empty bottles tossed haphazardly into the sea. he swallows and wraps an arm around your waist to help you into the bedroom. 

you’d wanted a house on the beach, because you’d grown up near the sea, and proclaimed that it was your first love. maybe he should have known then, seen the warning signs tattooed into your skin like the remnants of sand -- never fall for a girl who’s already in love with the feeling of drowning. 

he puts you to bed and sits next to you, running his fingers through your hair. 

how did we get here? he wants to ask. 

instead he says, “i really loved you. you know.” 

your eyes flutter open to look at him, and he thinks that for a moment, he sees the you he fell in love with, with eyes like seaglass and lips the color of coral reefs. 

“i know.” 

you reach up to touch his face, trace his lips, the beauty mark by his eye. 

“i really loved you too.” 

you’d told him, way back when, that there are shipwrecks caught between your ribs, but back then, he hadn’t known to be afraid of sea monsters. so he’d pulled you to him and kissed his way down your ribs, one for every single one, till you were left soft and pliant beneath him. 

he’d said that he’d kiss you till you’re full of nothing but lost treasure, and you said you’d let him. 

where did it all go wrong? he wants to ask. 

instead, he says, “will you be okay?” 

you lick your lips and nod, letting your hand fall. 

“will you still be here tomorrow?” you ask. 

suga sighs, his stomach churning with an entire ocean of unsaid words. and maybe that’s where it all went wrong -- everything he swallowed back down. he bites his tongue, and wonders if you could taste them, the remnants of all those words behind the tombstones of his teeth, every time you kissed. 

“maybe. i... i don’t know.” 

you nod again. 

“okay. that’s okay.” 

he watches you for a few more moments before getting up, closing the bedroom door behind him with a soft click. his feet are cold against the wood-paneled floors, and there are seashells painted onto the walls of the hallway. 

he pauses by the window, and looks out to the sea, the tide crashing against the distant rocks, the beach dark and empty, though it’s never still. he thinks that you should have never gotten a house so close to the beach, so close to the lulling pull of the sea. 

because it’s easier to blame the sea for the lives it takes, than the people who insist on swimming. because it’s so, so easy to love the sea. but the thing they never tell you is, the sea has always been a jealous lover. 

and it doesn’t like to share.
