The photographer worked with Oakes Vegas Studio from '30 to '41 when the studio closed. He took these photos after the travel mentioned in the paper, and remained in Las Vegas through part of 1942 before relocating to the Pacific Northwest, and Alaska.

"Hell-Raising Las Vegas” May 1940

Photo by Paul Dorsey from Look Magazine’s 8/13/40 issue, photographed during Helldorado celebrations earlier that year. This is Fremont at 2nd. Mission Bar & Oasis Cafe in the background are the future location of Golden Nugget.

Look Magazine’s coverage of Las Vegas showing western-themed celebrations, Block 16, and two cowboys riding into a bar on a horse, were viewed as an embarrassment to the city leaders in the early days of Las Vegas travel promotion.

“Calling Las Vegas the place that is ‘wild, wooly and wide open, where men are men and sin is a civic virtue’ … Look’s article leaves amazed readers with the conception that Vegas is a ‘hell-raising’ outpost where two-gun men still battle it out in saloons.” - Vail Pittman. Review-Journal, 8/5/40.

Las Vegas postcards, 1929 & 1931

The 1929 photo postcard (also found at UNR) shows a movie poster for The Flying Fool (1929) in front of Majestic Theatre.

The illustrated postcard has a 1931 serial number and is dated 9/20/31 on the back of this copy. The photo was taken from the same position showing a different drug store on the left. Joan Crawford’s Dance Fools Dance (1931) is the movie poster in front of Majestic Theatre.
