News

Based on oasis-haze’s post here:

Carol’s knee was jumping.

The jostling movement was transferring from her knee to Daryl’s, where he was sitting directly next to her. There was plenty of room on the old couch, but suction-cupped to her side was where he needed to be in that moment.

She was digesting a lot of information, about everything that had happened in her absence. On top of having to process all of that horror, the two of them were also stuck waiting on an update from the Hilltop about Maggie. The radio was resting on the coffee table in front of them, and the living room was full of the others in the group needing that update too.

On a folding chair across the room, Rick’s knee was also jumping, but he was holding it down with an elbow. Michonne was a statue beside him with her arms folded, and Tara was sandwiched between Rosita and Eugene. Tara had the same overwhelmed look as Carol, processing the same news.

The air was just a little too heavy, considering Sasha’s last radio message had been that Maggie was okay. Daryl knocked his knee against Carol’s to disrupt the jumping. Carol twitched and looked at him. He offered what he hoped was a reassuring smile. Carol tried to return the smile but was only partially successful. He appreciated the effort.

She sighed and leaned forward, trapping her forearms between her thighs and bowing her head. Daryl leaned back to free his arm, where it was pinned against her shoulder, and he rubbed his hand across her back.

“I should be there,” she muttered.

Sitting on the floor on Carol’s other side, Carl tilted his head and exhaled.

“The Saviors are all over the place between here and there. We can’t let them know that us and the Hilltop have contact.”

The radio buzzed, and everyone sat up straighter.

“Baby’s okay,” was Sasha’s greeting. “Doc definitely wants her to stay here for the rest of the pregnancy, but he says they’re both okay.”

The room in unison exhaled heavily in relief. Daryl clasped his hand around Carol’s shoulder and gave her a gentle shake. Carol hung her head and put her hands over her face as the relief crashed over her, and he leaned closer to her in support.

Tara was the first to start crying, and Rosita just held onto her.

“C’mon,” Daryl coaxed Carol upright and let her curl into him. “Y’all right.”

“Oh…” Rick made a low noise. “Okay, she’s okay. They’re okay.”

He said like it could be even more true if he repeated it.

Michonne wiped at her eyes and stepped up, taking the radio. “Thank you, Sasha. That’s great news.”

Carol hiccuped through a tiny laugh, and Daryl gave her knee a squeeze. Yeah, they were okay.

Cuddles

“4. Sleeping together. But not like that. Cuddling, waking up entangled in each other, hand-holding under the covers.”

Carol never wanted to wake up any other way again.

The breeze that drifted through the open window was cool and carried the smell of the rain into their bedroom. Daryl was lying on his side between her and the window, and his back was blocking most of the chill. Carol was curled on her side facing him, and she had woken up with his arm slung over her shoulder and her forehead nuzzled against his chest, feeling his warmth seeping through the soft cotton shirt between them.

His head was arched back on the pillow, with his mouth hanging open and his throat bared long toward her. An incredibly vulnerable position, and Carol reached up a hand, drawing the back of her fingers across the hollow between his collar bones.

Daryl snorted in his sleep and twitched, curling his head back down instinctively. He peered one eye open at her, the other bunched closed against the pillow.

“Good morning,” she murmured.

He gave a sleepy smile and burrowed into the pillow a bit. “Hey.”

He stretched out lazily, disentangling his legs from Carol’s. She took her hand from his collar and spread her palm over his chest, where she could just make out the dark ink of his tattoo through the thin white fabric of his shirt.

Daryl blinked himself more awake and settled back beside her. “Time’s’it?”

Carol swallowed a yawn. “I don’t even know…It’s raining.”

He grunted and tugged the blanket up over his shoulders again and slid his hand between the two of them, finding her hand and twining their fingers together. All the wiggling and shifting let a sliver of cool air into the blanket cocoon that surrounded them, and Carol whined, scooting closer.

Daryl snorted and moved his leg across her hips, tugging her to him until he was half on top of her.

“This s’nice,” he murmured into her hair.

She stroked her index finger between his knuckles where their hands were together between them. “Mhm.”

With her free arm, she slid her hand under the hem of his shirt and spread her palm over his ribs. He felt soft and solid under her fingertips, and her ring finger rubbed at a little raised freckle on his side.

“I missed you,” she confessed in a whisper.

He made a low noise of agreement and pressed a kiss at her hairline. “Ain’t gonna miss me ever again.”

“Hm, better not,” she replied, then closed her eyes and nuzzled more into his warmth.

The patter of the rain outside lulled them both back to sleep.

Holding Hands

“6. Hand-holding while walking and neither of them wanting to let go so they both just hold on even though their hands are sweaty and cramping up.”

They had held hands before. When they were sitting next to each other or standing together during group meetings. When one of them was upset or…Well, okay, generally when they were being still. Holding hands and walking was new, and not just for the two of them, but for Daryl in general.

He must have been a little stiff, because Carol wiggled her arm to make their joined hands swing a little more animatedly between them. Daryl started a bit and looked at her. Her smile was coy, and she faced forward again as they walked around the perimeter of Alexandria’s walls. So far they hadn’t found any weaknesses, but they were making a third round…just in case.

Oddly enough, Daryl had been the one to initiate the hand holding. He had seen Rick and Michonne do it, Aaron and Eric do it, Tara and Denise do it, and Maggie and Glenn had frequently held hands too. Their example had made it look easy enough, but his own execution had been less of a gentle touch to take her hand and more of…an abrupt grab.

Carol had been a good sport though and shifted her grip so that it was a more natural hold. Her touch was soft and loose, allowing for her fingers to squeeze his intermittently or play around his knuckles. Well, shit, once again she clearly knew what she was doing more than he did.

His neck flushed and stayed that color as they walked, and this was…nice. Carol had been his anchor in every kind of intangible way over the years, but having a physical tether like this was new and…Shit, his hand was sweating.

If Carol noticed, she didn’t let on, and he rubbed his thumb against the back of her hand affectionately. He caught the tiny grin as she looked down at the ground and then forward again. It made his chest flutter, and he gave her hand a squeeze. She returned it and then flexed her fingers. As soon as she curled her fingers around his hand again, then he took the turn flexing his fingers.

“Hang on,” Carol said, tugging her hand free.

His disappointment must have shown on his face, because she took one look at him and then laughed. She slowed her walk, and he came to a stop, confused. She moved to his other side so that they could hold hands with their hands that weren’t sweaty and cramping. Before they resumed walking, she did a sort of wiggle thing with her arms like a wave dance move. Her free arm curled up and then down, and then her other arm went up and down, causing his arm to jostle.

“C’mon.” She cackled and ducked her head, doing the wave motion again.

This time, Daryl’s arm in her grasp did the wave with her halfheartedly, and he looked at her in resigned amusement.

“You’re weird sometimes,” he snorted.

She laughed, and they continued to walk, hand in hand.

At A Loss

So…there was a tiger.

…What?

The leader, Ezekiel…King Ezekiel, apparently…beamed at him.

“A friend of Carol is a friend of the Kingdom. Welcome!” he said boisterously.

What?

The big cat at the man’s side twitched its ears and regarded Daryl almost…like it was sizing him up.

“Uh…thanks,” he mumbled, then cleared his throat.

Beside him, Carol was a reassuring presence, but she did nothing to clear his confusion.

“Be well, fellow warrior,” Ezekiel waved a hand. “Jerry will give you a tour.”

The man behind Ezekiel waved. “That’s me. I’m Jerry, but people around here just call me Jerry.” He winked and smiled.

What?

Luckily, Carol intercepted. “Oh, I think I know my way around enough to show him the ropes. Your Highness.” She bobbed her head.

Ezekiel tilted his head in acknowledgement. “Very well. Enjoy our splendors, Daryl, though I must say, on your arm you carry one of the greatest visions in the land.”

Carol, her arm hooked around his arm, gave a chuckle. “OooOkay.”

Daryl let her lead him out of the “Throne Room” and out onto a shaded walkway between two buildings.

“What?” he finally grunted.

Carol turned toward him and smiled. Her arm loosed from his elbow, and she rubbed her hand up his arm. “I know.”

Daryl opened and closed his mouth a few times, wordless from both the ridiculousness of the situation and the warm contact of her hand on his arm. It left him flustered.

“He…There’s a tiger.”

“I know. That’s…Shiva,” Carol said the name in a singsong voice.

Daryl nodded slowly and then faced forward, glancing around the place.

“The tiger is named Shiva…”

“I know this is a lot to swallow.”

He barked out a laugh and rubbed the back of his head. “In the span of a month, I met a guy named Jesus and another who calls himself a king…I’m…” He lifted his shoulders in a helpless gesture and shrugged.

Carol rubbed his arm again. “I know…C’mon.” She patted his hand. “Let’s take a walk.”

They took a few steps, Daryl using her hand on his arm as an anchoring point.

“…Tiger…”

“I know…Just embrace the bullshit, sweetie.”
