President Obama traveled to New Orleans today to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of Katrina. His first stop was Treme, one of the oldest black neighborhoods in America, and the subject of the recent HBO David Simon series, Treme.

Yes, the recovery needs to be stronger for ALL areas which Obama also acknowledged. But for today, and for these black Americans, a visit from the nation’s first African American president meant something. Unlike ten years ago, the local citizens hit so hard by the storm were treated with the respect and dignity that they deserve. Bravo, Mr. President.

"Three full-grown men in a 9-by-10 cell," Obama said, as he looked at the cell's meager furnishings, among them a toilet, sink, bunk bed and a third bed placed against a wall. "Overcrowding like that is something that has to be addressed."

For the first time in our nation’s history, a sitting president visited a Federal prison. President Obama toured the El Reno Federal Correctional Institution in Oklahoma, spoke with prison officials and had a sit-down with some inmates.

CultureTRIBUTE: Beau Biden Memorial - Dover, Delaware - Senate Hall - June 2015

Services begin for the Vice President’s son, Iraq war veteran and former Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, as he honorably lies in state today. Public viewing services will continue through tomorrow and President Obama will deliver the eulogy at the Family Funeral Mass on Saturday.
