Underneath It All

JJ Maybank x Reader

A/N: This is my first time writing for JJ and the OBX universe in general, so I hope someone out there enjoys this! I also made a "on the obx" playlist that has vibes perfect for this fic and feeling like you're out on the boat with the pogues. You can find the link for that, here.

The night is hot, the air thick. Crickets and cicadas chirp loudly accompanied by the low croaks from the frogs in the reeds down by the dock. Music plays quietly from the radio, static intercepting the melody every once in a while, but you don’t mind. You couldn’t make out the song anyway, not over JJ’s endless chatter.

“I just know the waves down there have got to be insane, you know? Like, that’s what I’ll do all day, just surf -- ride the wave --”

“Mhmm,” you mumble, lifting your head from his chest to get a better look at him. His smile grows when your eyes connect with his, glinting something beautiful under the stars.

“Are you even listening?” he asks, stifling a laugh.

“Of course, something about the Yucatán...again.” You sigh, tucking yourself back into him, nestling your head into the crook of his neck. He sighs. His hand slides from where it rests on the small of your bare back, up your spine and across your chest and neck to your cheek.

“Don’t sound so excited,” he chuckles.

Rolling your eyes, you place your hand over his and purse your lips for a kiss to which JJ happily obliges, gently pressing his lips to yours. A warm feeling runs the course of your body, beginning in your cheeks and settling in your stomach. It never goes away, never fails to take over you every time you kiss. You hoped it never would fade.

JJ pulls away, much too soon for your liking, and smiles, resting his forehead against yours.

“What if we just went?” His voice cuts through the soft chirps of the crickets.

The question he’s posed brings you back to reality.

“JJ we can’t,” you reason, sitting up.

“Why not?”

You watch the smile slowly fade from his lips, his brow now furrowed with confusion. He sighs and sits up, propping himself on his elbows, his eyes level with yours.

“We have an English test on Friday.”

JJ rolls his eyes, the smile returning. “No, you have a test. Besides, that’s not a good reason.”

“Last time I checked, having to repeat our senior year of high school is a pretty good reason. If not that, I think juvenile delinquency is.”

He laughs, “juvenile delinquency, come on.”

“Besides, you know we wouldn’t make it very far, my parents would come after me.”

“I’m surprised they haven’t come to take you back from me yet. You know, you’re really slumming it out here on The Cut with a pogue.” His tone is harsh, his words sour.

It’s always been difficult making things work between JJ and your family, that’s why you’ve always relished in the moments alone with him. They were rare, but they made the whole world slip away. Suddenly, you understood JJ’s longing for the Yucatán.

“Hey,” you whisper, leaning forward to capture his face between your palms, “it doesn’t matter what they think. I’m here, with you, because I love you.”

His face softens as you rub your thumb across his cheek, placing a kiss on the tip of his nose. His skin leaves the taste of salt on your lips and a memory of swimming in the waves earlier in the day flickers across your mind.

“And besides, you don’t get these kinds of views over on Figure Eight,” you say, pulling away, gesturing vaguely to the yard.

“Views of overgrown weeds and run-down shacks?” he mocks.

“How dare you talk about The Chateau that way!”

You both laugh.

It’s quiet for a moment. The sun had beyond set, but the light of the moon reflects something almost bewitching off the placid water. The bright collection of stars above illuminates the twisted tree trunks and tall grass, each an untamed home to the frogs and field mice. Everything here so full of life is gone at home, swapped out for mundane, tightly manicured lawns. The beauty of The Cut exists in its wild nature, everything and everyone roaming free from meticulous, judgmental eyes.

“Well, I think it’s beautiful on this side of the island. They’d never allow any of this, the last thing they want is for anything or anyone to be different.”

“I wish I saw it the way you do,” JJ sighs.

“I wish you saw yourself the way I see you.”

“I wish you saw my Yucatán plan the way I do!”

“I’m being serious, JJ.” You glance at him. His bottom lip is pulled taut between his teeth. JJ abhorred compliments, any kind of praise, really.

“You’re always so serious,” he groans, flopping back down onto the bed. Always running from feelings.

You play along, flopping down next to him. He turns on his side and you follow suit to face him, tangling your legs in between his.

“Wait, who tried to break John B. out of jail by stealing an ambulance?”

JJ chuckles, “Me.”

“And who went to jail on Pope’s behalf?”

“I did.”

“Who--”

“Okay, okay, I get it, what’s your point?”

“My point, JJ, is that you’re special. I know you don’t hear it enough and I know it’s easier for you to brush it off and pretend it’s not true, but you’re not your dad. You’re not destined for the life you think you are -- you deserve so much more -- and you’re capable of it.”

Silence creeps back into the room, but you can make out the slightest trace of a smile on JJ’s face under the moonlight.

“I don’t know what to say,” he mumbles.

“You don’t have to,” you reply.

“So..no Yucatán?”

“After graduation.”

“I knew I could break you.”
