Favorite way to find out an OC is queer is to stumble upon it.
Like I imagined asking my OC Canary if she liked any boys and I couldn't imagine her doing anything but laughing. She's a lesbian. I didn't know that until she laughed.
I didn't know my OC Summer was bi until I realized how much she would love my OC Serena. I straight up moved Serena to her universe so they could be together.
My OC Nick refused to really speak to me until I wrote him as a guy, and then I got to glimpse more of his experiments and love of legends way more than I did when I imagined him as a girl or an enby. He didn't show up in anything but sepia before I did that.
My OCs Shell and Cerise were friends at first but never felt like either that or a couple when I pondered making them one. It seemed entirely against the logic of them to make them a couple with anyone but each other, and that didn't work either. So I realized they're aro. Then I heard the word "queer platonic". And it all clicked. It's them. There's no romance for them but they love each other more than anything.
Making characters queer deliberately is also fun, don't get me wrong. But when it feels like a natural part of them that they just... It's just so much fun to write, and it's just another way you can exercise your creativity by letting things flow. It just feels more real when it's like I hear it from them.
I love writing...
