Gunnar’s first wife was Kalda, whom he had two sons with. During a raid of a village in the North of Norway, Gunnar caught sight of the most beautiful woman he had ever laid eyes on, Gyda. He claimed her for himself and they both fell madly in love with each other. Kalda did not like the idea of sharing her husband, becoming angry and bitter. She took their sons and moved into her own cottage, leaving Gunnar. Gyda gave Gunnar a daughter, Revna, but when she attempted to give him another pup, she passed during childbirth.

The Last Kingdom and Vikings crossover.
Having grown up with Ragnar and Rollo since they were just little children, it was natural for Gunnar to become a Viking like his best-friend/brother. Gunnar and Ragnar were practically inseparable, always watching each other’s backs and protecting each other’s families. The warrior joined Ragnar when he left their sleepy farming hamlet, and helped him claim Kattegat. He journeyed with Ragnar on his voyages to discover new lands, having that same passion for adventure. Gunnar was with Ragnar when they raided Lindisfarne in Northumbria and their subsequent visits to the new land called England.
When Ragnar turned his sights to Paris, Gunnar didn’t hesitate to follow him. Leaving behind his seventeen year old daughter in Kattegat, they set out for untold riches and the glory of conquering a new land. The battles proved more challenging then they were expecting. The warrior was a bear of a man, but he was not impervious. Gunnar fell in battle, having taken on five Parisians and killing three of them before succumbing to his wounds. Ragnar and Björn witnessed his fall and both felt the loss deeply. Just like Ragnar was a father figure to Revna, Gunnar was a father figure to Björn.
Only Gunnar did not die as presumed. There was barely breath in his body as he laid bleeding in the sand, but he held on. After the battle, the Parisians worked on clearing the dead, and they were surprised to find the big warrior still alive. They were prepared to end his suffering, to run a sword through his heart, but Rollo stopped them. Asking instead for them to try to save the warrior. It was Rollo’s intention to have Gunnar at his side. To serve under him as he claimed a place in the court of Paris, betraying his brother and his people.
Gunner refused. His loyalty was to Ragnar, and it would not waver. Rollo spent years torturing, beating and whipping the warrior to try to break him, but it was all to no avail. Gunnar would not turn against Ragnar. After years of torture, Rollo finally gives up and sends Gunnar to be a slave. Forced to do manual labor or face the whip, Gunnar spent years toiling under the slave master’s command. Even though they tried everything to break him, the Northman would not give up the hope of being reunited with his daughter and his brother, Ragnar.
After 8 long years, an opportunity arose for Gunnar to escape. He spirited away into the countryside away from Paris and eventually found a costal village where he was able to secure passage to Norway on a trader’s ship. Upon return to Kattegat, Gunnar is saddened to find his family gone. Revna and her brothers having left years ago to settle with the Danes in Wessex. Lagertha and Björn gone on a raid to Irland, and Ragnar having disappeared after the second failed attack on Paris.
Having nothing left for him in Kattegat, Gunnar takes a late ship to Wessex, before winter falls. In the hopes that he might find his daughter…
