Hena - Backstory
[Character rights belong to me. Similarities to others is purely coincidental.]
[Soldier from Ulrin’s story.]
Hena grew up in the city of Wolfmoor with her mother, father, and older sister. Her and her sister Etherna were born with magic abilities. This was expected considering their family produced powered offspring every other generation and their parents were powerless. Hena and Etherna spent a few years training with their grandmother to learn how to master their abilities.
It was cut short when Etherna was offered a marriage to the Prince of Inyx. The whole family traveled to Edon Valley to support Etherna in her wonderful new marriage. Etherna wasn't going to accept at first, but she wanted to do it in order to help her family. The whole family was excited for her and the country of Inyx was excited to welcome her as their Queen.
Hena continued to spend a couple years furthering her ability when she soon released that her lightening based teleportation could also be used for healing. Though it was based on only one element, this still made Hena a duel user. Her grandmother begged her to keep the healing a secret and to only use it if it was absolutely necessary.
A few years later, news had spread around the country that the Queen was dying and was not expected to survive. Hena and her family traveled to Edon Valley to go visit, but the King refused to let them see her. Hena's grandmother pulled Hena aside.
"Sneak into that castle and heal your sister, Hena."
"What?" Hena whispered. "But you said-"
"This is an absolutely necessary time. That's your sister!"
Hena was afraid, but worked her way inside the castle. She struggled to find where her sister's room was located when she overheard soldiers gossiping about how Etherna was locked in the dungeon until execution. Hena tried everything to get down into the dungeon, but the King had it well guarded.
Working her way back through the castle, she found herself walking into a nursery. Quietly, Hena walked closer to the crib sitting in the center of the far wall. She slowly pulled the blanket down. Inside the crib was two babies, one boy, one girl. Hena placed a hand softly on each babies forehead. No sign of powers. These have to be Etherna's children.
Hena quickly snuck back out of the castle to her family. She pulled her grandmother away from everyone else.
"She's not dying. The King is executing her," Hena whispered.
"What?! But why?"
"I'm not sure. But.. I think Etherna gave birth to twins."
"And neither of them have powers because of our family genetics," her grandmother trailed off.
"Do you think there's a possibility that the King is killing her because her children are powerless?"
Hena's grandmother was about to respond when the King walked over to the two, clearing his throat.
"Dear Hena, might I speak with you for a moment?" The King asked.
Hena looked at her grandmother before turning to the King. "Of course."
The King walked Hena over to a secluded corner and leaned against the wall, his eyes sitting on her family.
"I know this news of your sister must sadden you. I'm trying everything I can to help her, but I fear she will not live past tomorrow." Hena listened on. She's positive she knows the reality of the situation, but will listen to what he has to say anyway. "I don't mean to sound as if I did not care for her, but I adore your family and I don't want to see your family struggle without my help. I'd like to offer what I offered your sister. Take me as your husband."
Hena stared at the ground for a few seconds before speaking. "With all due respect, I cannot take you as my husband. I won't disrespect my sister like that. If you'll excuse me."
Hena began to walk away, but the King grabbed her wrist, leaning down to her ear.
"I will not take no as an answer, Hena. Your sister got sick of her own ignorance. Think of your family."
"I am thinking of my family. They can take care of themselves without your help."
The family left the castle to return to their normal lives. Hena told the family what she witnessed inside the castle, and the family couldn't help, but agree to Hena's suspicion. The King held a funeral for the dead Queen, which the family did not attend. Hena made her way to the graveyard which held her sister in the midnight hours the next day. What she didn't expect was that the King would be waiting for her.
Hena realized the King wouldn't give up until he had her. Then she would meet the same fate as her sister. She fled home, packed what she felt was necessary, and fled. Leaving behind her family feared her, but she knew this is what they wanted. They couldn't bare to lose her the same way they lost Etherna.
Hena would not return to Edon Valley until many years later when the King's twin children were rumored to hold duel magic users in the dungeons in order to produce powered offspring. She would suit up in her armor, jump onto her horse, and make for the castle. She will protect magic users from this family.
"For Etherna!"
