Canyon - Flaxen chestnut. Son of Warren Jr. and Ray.

Warren Jr. - Liver chestnut flaxen. Short and scruffy. Son of Warren Sr. and Rose. Taken in by Nash and his lead mare River Crosser/Crosser.

Ray - Dark palomino. Daughter of Star. Foalhood friend to Warren.

Honeycomb/Spite - Golden palomino. The Golden Terror. Former show horse let loose into the wild. Father to Star, Goldie, and many others. (He named himself Spite btw)

Nash - Pale red dun with a crescent moon shaped star on his right brow. Former ranch horse. Lead stallion. Father to Pride and adoptive parent to Warren Jr.

Goldie - Pale Buckskin. Another of Spite's children. Younger half brother to Star.

River Crosser/Crosser - Bay splash white. Long messy, scruffy hair. Spirited partner and lead mare to Nash. Mother to Pride and adopted son, Warren.

Star - Palomino with birdcatcher spots. The pretty boy. Friend and close ally to Nash. Ray's father.

Warren Sr. - Bay Roan. Older band stallion that passed during a very harsh winter, never being able to meet his namesake born the following spring.

Rose - Liver chestnut flaxen. Biological mother to Warren Jr., naming him in honor of his late father. She and her two sisters were the only survivors of a terrible winter storm wiped out most of their herd. Nicknamed Thorn by other horses because of her bad temper.

Pride - Bay with lots of white. The youngest of Nash and Crosser. Adoptive brother to Warren. Would eventually lead the herd with Warren as 2nd in command. However, the brothers would have a falling out..

Bottom:

Warren and the tall, handsome chestnut stranger, Judas. They will meet much later on.

Judas - Light Chestnut. Ex race horse.

Letting Loose - Part Three

Summary: Madeleine’s stay in Turkey comes to an end.

They head back to the hotel after an eventful day of walking around the small town. They explored a small farmer’s market where Nash convinced her to take a grape and eat it, they ventured into thrift shops and spent a decent amount of time ducking the paparazzi.

           They flop down on the couch, letting the exhaustion wash over them. Nash looks over at her, her cheeks and nose red from the sun and her hair thrown up in a bun, still damp from skinny dipping.

           She looks over at him, his shirt damp from sweat with a sloppy bun on his head. If he wasn’t already tan, she was positive he’d have red burns on him as well.

           “Thank you. For today.”

           “Of course, love.” He puts his arm around her shoulder and she leans into him.

           “You are mine,” he grunts into her ear. His hot breath lighting her nerve endings on fire, she feels herself getting wetter.

           He turns her around and pushes her forward, her hands gripping the sides of the cold porcelain sink. Quickly, he jerks her legs back, pushing his cock into her. She lets out a small gasp as she adjusts to his full, hard thrusts.

           His hand snakes around her hip, his fingers beginning to tease her clit while his other hand slides up her back, his fingers tangle into her hair.            “Yes, love?” He rolls over, facing her even though the darkness of the room covers each of their faces.

           “I leave tomorrow.”

           “I know.”

           “Tell me to stay.”

           Nash pulls her to the middle of the bed before he rolls on top of her, using his knee to spread her legs apart before he pushes up into her. She lets out a gasp as he kisses her neck and slowly rocks his hip into her.

           They’ve been wrapped in each other’s arms and bed sheets several times over the last eight days they’ve spent together, but not like this. This time they weren’t just having sex, they weren’t fucking, this time they were making love.

           She moans softly against his neck as he softly groans into her ear between kissing her. His long hair is down, which each thrust it brushes up against her side, causing a ticklish sensation. His hand slides over and starts to gently brush his knuckles against her clit as she continues to moan in pleasure.

           Madeleine sits at the dining room table listening to her parents bicker. Her father couldn’t believe the magazine stories about her and Nash, or Mr. Man Bun as the tabloids coined him. He was going on and on about her honor and how no noble would want her now that she was tainted and of course he had to add just how disappointed in her he was. While her mother disagreed with her father, saying it was about time she let loose and enjoyed life.

           Nash sits there at the bar, knocking back another beer. He’s lost count of how many this would make, but he isn’t very considered. It’s only been a week or so since Madeleine left, going back to her life as a noble and him becoming just some faint memory.

           He watched her change so much in their short time together. Going from a shy girl who made each move with hesitation to this confident woman, ready to take life the horns. Most of that was her own doing, but he still liked to think he helped her. That he was a part, even if it was a small one, of her becoming an even more amazing woman.

           Lost in thought, he doesn’t see his group of friends walk in and up behind him.

           “Still pining over that countess or whatever she was?” The dark-haired man hits him on the shoulder.

           He doesn’t say anything, continuing to nurse the beer in his hand. His buddies’ conversation buzzes in the background as he thinks of their last morning together.

           He wakes up first, careful not to let his stirring wake her. He loves seeing her this peaceful, the day’s problems not yet getting a hold of her. Often, he wondered what she could be dreaming of, but he usually settled on the idea that she was at her happy place. Wherever that may be.

           Saying goodbye is never easy for anyone, Nash was no exception to this. There was an unspoken understanding that this goodbye was a final goodbye. How often could a countess escape her life and mingle with someone so beneath her station. Just thinking of watching her walk away, suitcase in hand, cause tears to pool in his eyes.

           As gently as possible, he climbed off the bed and slips on his jeans and t-shirt. In a perfect world, they would go back to the café he took her to and while eating she’d decide to stay longer, maybe even forever. They pick a place on the map and move there, content with a life that was shaped around just the two of them. But alas, this was not a perfect world.

           Leaning down, he places a soft kiss on her forehead which causes her to roll to her other side before letting out a gentle sigh. He leaves a note on the nightstand, hoping she’d understand why he left this way and that he meant each word he penned on the paper.

           Before he can change his mind, he slips out the door, leaving the woman he had fallen in love with, sleeping with the words: “Until next time, love” scribbled beside her.

           His friend bumping into him brings him back to reality. He throws up a gesture for the bartender to bring him another beer.

           “Man, you got it bad,” his friend teases him, but failing to get a reaction from Nash, “Let it go, man, she was just fuck.”

           Everything moves in a blur, but he comes to when he grabs his friend’s collar, shoving him into the wall, “Do NOT speak about her like that.” He lets him go before he drops cash on the bar and storms out of the bar.

           I need to see her again.

           It’d been the same argument for the last four weeks that she’d been home. Every meal was riddled with the whiplash of approval vs. disapproval. Her father continuously had suitors coming to the dutchy in hopes she’d quickly make a match to erase this black stain she apparently brought onto the family.

           However, this morning was different, she didn’t know if it was the constant anxiety she was feelings or the eggs that she ate, but her stomach wouldn’t settle. She quickly excuses herself, rushing to the bathroom where she throws up her breakfast.

           What on earth…wait…

           She pulls up an app on her phone, looking at this month before swiping to last before she pales. There’s a pink box under her sink, she pulls out a foil pack before opening it. She sits on the side of the tub, suddenly feeling very faint, before hearing her timer end. Picking up the small plastic test, her whole world stops.

OC-tober Day 28:  Rest

Outside the rain poured down, and the noise of traffic still echoed even in Nash’s kitchen.

Vinny prodded at the stove impatiently, occasionally tossing it some more newspaper or another stick of wood, and eventually Amelia could feel a little of the warmth radiating.

All the cards lay on the table.  Every move she knew how to make had been made.  It wasn’t her usual habit, hadn’t been her habit in years, but she found herself chewing a fingernail before she could stop.

At least Nash had bought her some time--and given her a roof over her head for the night.

She knew what Vinny was going to ask before he asked it.

“So what do we do now?”  Slumped in his chair, he rubbed his hands in front of the fire and didn’t look at her.

She opened her mouth, closed it, opened it again.  Finally she said the only thing she could.  “I don’t know.”

That got him to glance sideways, a disturbed frown on his face.

Don’t say ‘you always know, you always come up with something,’ she thought.  It’s the last thing I can stand to hear right now.

But he didn’t.  After a moment he sighed, scooched his chair closer to hers, and said instead, “Maybe we should just...take a night off.”

“What?”

He chewed his lip, “Nobody knows where we are except you, me, and Nash.  And none of us are the type to give that away, yeah?”  His attempt at a smile was weak as watered-down tea, but the fact he’d attempted at all meant something--especially at a time like this.  “We have at least until tomorrow to figure out where to go.  And it’s not like we can do much before then, anyway.”

It went against every instinct she had, every instinct except the one that weighted down her eyelids and dragged her feet.  But if there was nothing else to do, there was no point getting all balled up in the meantime.  Sighing, she nodded.  “Let’s just rest for the night.”

OC-tober Day 9:  Spice

Lately Nash’s usual contacts hadn’t made it through, and the pawn shop’s side business of illegal liquor had dried up like a businessman on Monday morning.

Nash scrambled for the third and fourth string rumrunners and distillers, and at this point it was starting to show.

A whiff of the open jar made lights flash behind their eyes and burned their nose.  “Is this straight wood varnish?” Nash asked as they took in the mismatched assortment of collected bottles, flasks, and canisters stacked in wooden milk crates.

“S’not wood varnish, no,” said Smokey, or Smitty, or whatever the name of the longshoreman was who’d helped drag the crates off the back of the truck.  “Ya cook the wood, see.  No varnish in it.”

With a blank stare Nash’s nursing days came back to them, and with it, the occasional vision of methanol poisoning from wood alcohol.  Nasty stuff.

But if they weren’t selling it, the next two-bit dive bar would.  And the kids today would down benzene if they thought it’d keep them spifflicated, and they’d do it intentionally if they thought it’d get their names in the papers.  Besides, when it came down to the wire, Nash wasn’t going to be their nurse.

“Welp.”  The delivery had already been paid for, anyway.  They dusted off their hands, shook on it with Smokey.  “I can always cut the good whiskey with it, stretch it out.  Might give it some spice.”

The main character.  A flapper constantly on the verge of either being broke or super successful.  Disaster bisexual, emphasis on the ‘disaster.’  Claims to see spirits but would tell a ghost to its face that she doesn’t believe in it.  Dance competition champion.  Collector of shiny things.  Special Skill:  Fast Talk.

Matilda Rackham

Age: 23-24

Amelia’s twin sister.  Offered the position of deuteragonist but never called back and claims she never got the message.  Houseplants>>>Housepets>>>Housemates.  Moral compass who wants to retire because you never listen to her anyway.  The kind of librarian that doesn’t let you remove the books from the library you’ll get your filthy fingerprints all over them stop

Joan/John Nash

Age:  40′s, probably--never really open or honest about their personal life

Pawn shop dealer, information broker, jack of all trades, possible trickster spirit.  Nash knows a little about everything and everybody you could possibly want to know about but rarely tells it like it is.  Apparently was in the Army during the Great War as a nurse, but won’t say much more than that.  Amelia’s oldest and most trusted friend, which isn’t saying much; also Amelia’s fence.  Gender only exists when it’s convenient.  Basically a 1970′s hippie in the 1920′s.

Makoto “Koko” Sakagawa

Age:  22-23

Judgmental art lesbian.  Amelia’s on-again-off-again girlfriend.  Smol and angery, will bite your kneecaps off.  Claims to understand Dadaism.  Nothing you do will ever be impressive so don’t even try--wait why aren’t you trying to impress me???

Vinny Luciano

Age:  23-24

Sar-caustic.  Shoots down your ideas but has none of his own.  Amelia’s “spirit-contact” aka the guy who hides in the closet and makes ghost-noises during seances.  Eats cigarettes and stress.  Too Catholic to be bi, too bi to be Catholic.  Never fuckin learned how to read.

James “Rolls” Royston

Age:  25-26

A bad idea in an expensive suit.  What he can’t buy or shoot isn’t worth his time.  Bootlegger.  Wannabe gangster.  Amelia’s on-again-off-again boyfriend (I told you she was a disaster bisexual).  A lot of fun at parties.  Thinks he’s the main character.

Felice Luciano/Felix the Cat

Age:  20??? 100???  Who’s to say

Actually Vinny’s younger brother but they hadn’t talked in years before that time Felix tried to shoot him.  Killing People:  It’s a Living.  Used to be a nice boy.  Thought he was dead inside.  Rather upset to discover he’s not.  Doesn’t like when other people think they’re in charge of him.  Doesn’t like other people.  Identity crisis in 3...2...1...

Happy Worldbuilding Wednesday! Let's talk about talking about identities :P In your WIP, do you use modern LGBTQA+ terms, or have you come up with terms of your own? If someone was coming out, what words would they have to describe themselves?

Thanks for the ask, even though I’m answering late!

There are some forms of modern-day terminology in Beg, Borrow or Steal, as it takes place in the mid-late 1920′s, but not as extensive as we have--for example, there’s no term for asexuality yet, and although there’s gay and lesbian subcultures, homosexuality is considered a mental illness by official diagnosis.  They’re also at the point where there’s a difference between being a gay man and being a man who sometimes does sexual/romantic things with men, etc. etc., where for some people it’s an identity and for some people you get married and have kids and pass down property like your parents before you, and whoever you see outside your marriage, you’re discreet about it.

If someone were to come out for an identity we have terms for nowadays, but they didn’t back then--there are at least 2 ace characters and a trans-nonbinary one--they’d be more likely to describe what they were feeling rather than what identity they had.  For example, the NB character describes themself as “sometimes a man, sometimes a woman, and sometimes I just don’t feel like dealing with the whole mess;” and they go by their last name--Nash--while using a different first name (either John or Joan, depending on the day and the people they’re talking to) only when necessary.
