STORY SUMMARY
Grace is born in 1853 and is Damon and Stefan's little sister. After their mother dies, she is sent away from home. Damon and Stefan send letters and visit her when they can, but there is nothing else they can do for her. Ultimately, Grace learns of her father's death, and the lack of communication from her brothers leads her to assume they have met the same fate. To save her life, Grace steals a large sum of money, and runs away.
Through some twists and turns, Klaus kidnaps her, but as an artist—he recognizes a fellow artist in the making. Grace excels at playing the piano, and Klaus spontaneously decides he likes her alive. He makes up a fake identity, a fake story, and for years after that, Grace gets a proper education, and ultimately finds employment as a lady's companion to a rich widow. Grace enters society.
Meanwhile, Elijah one day sees a portrait Klaus painted of Grace, and falls in love hard. He ends up getting introduced to Grace at a ball, and it is the perfect night. But neither of them can get what they want. Grace is confined by the rules of society, and Elijah, trying to do the moral thing—wants Grace to live a happy human life. He never sees her again, but they correspond via letters.
She hates the thought of having to find a husband and having children, but Grace yearns to fit in. In a stroke of luck, she meets a rich man she actually likes, and he falls in love with her. Shortly before the wedding, Damon finds his little sister again. He gives her the choice to get out of this engagement, and offers her vampirism.

Grace shows up on Klaus' doorstep, but it is Elijah who opens the door. And Elijah never could turn down a damsel in distress. Especially when he can have her now. Grace gets a thorough education on vampirism, and all the fun, murder, and seduction she could ever want. Klaus and Elijah are quite dedicated to making her realize that nothing is wrong with her, that she is not a bad person for wanting things, and that is hard work.
Ultimately, Grace stays with the Mikaelsons. She marries Elijah—somewhat against her better judgement. Befriending Rebekah is a difficult task at first, but they end up thick as thieves. Over the years, they occasionally have run-ins with the Salvatore brothers, but it never goes well—by the time Elijah finds Elena, both Damon and Stefan have been so thoroughly compelled they have no idea who the originals even are. This makes things a bit awkward when they ask Grace to help defend Elena against Klaus...
