Empress Acina’s Master Plan

You are Darth Acina, Empress of the Sith Empire.

You're the first sane ruler of the Sith in at least thirteen centuries, probably longer. Good times.

You've recently had the good fortune of making friends with the Commander of the Eternal Alliance, who formerly served as your predocessor's personal executioner and hatchet-woman.

She's proven herself a valuable ally, even if she does have the unfortunate habit of trying to flirt with you while mercenaries are trying to kill you both.

So your new best friend now has control of the Eternal Fleet, the most devastating weapon in the known galaxy. Which is fine. Given her background and your assistance during the war against Zakuul, you're very confident she'll be on your side the next time the corrupt Republic rears its ugly head. One day, you discover that there's a super-weapon hidden on Iokath, the world that created the Eternal Fleet. Knowing that the Alliance Commander has claimed Iokath as part of the Alliance's dominion, you naturally order your troops to invade and seize the super-weapon. This seems like a sound strategy. You are certain your new friend won't mind. After all, its just a 'small transgression'.

Turns out - plot twist! - the Republic AND the Alliance are already on Iokath as well! You're all after the super-weapon! This is not at all awkward.

You're feeling confident. But just to stack the deck in your favor, you have an ace up your sleeve!

This is Major Malavai Quinn. The Alliance Commander's former companion, former ship's pilot, and former lover. You’ve sent him as an envoy to remind the Commander of her old ties to the Sith Empire.

(You are certain the Commander is totally over that time Quinn betrayed her to Baras and tried to murder her. Sith are famous for their understanding natures, after all.)

This seems like an excellent plan! You are so smart!

Lana Beniko : Case Study (Part 3) When our Mentors Betray Us

I've touched before on Lana's reaction to Darth Arkous' betrayal. Having played through "Forged Alliances" two more times recently, I started to consider the subject more deeply. 

Lana is part of a culture - the Sith - where people accept that mentors - Masters - and their students - Apprentices - are eventually going to come into conflict. This is a recurring theme throughout Sith history, culminating in the Rule of Two, where they rebuilt the order around that principle.

But - she nevertheless seems rather hurt when Arkous 1) Doesn't trust her with details and particulars of the attack on Tython. 2) Didn't try to bring her into the Revanites - not that she would have probably taken the offer - but she would have been intrigued to know that the Emperor was a monster. 3) He cuts ties with her entirely after Manaan.

When the extent of his betrayal is revealed, she is a bit despondent. Because she can't trust Arkous, she's convinced she can't trust anyone in the Empire. That's very telling.  

Even then, she still expresses deep respect for his abilities.

Arkous actually sends her a message after Manaan. Her reaction is very informative.

When you finally confront Arkous on Rakata Prime, he is typically dismissive. Particularly of Lana.  

Then he dies. You can tell by the tone of voice she doesn't just regret the loss of the information Arkous and Darok could have provided. She regrets that he's dead as well.

What happens afterwards couldn't help.

I suspect she cared far more about this relationship than one would expect. She even talks about it years later in her ambient dialogue.

Clearly, she still thinks of him. He had a major impact on her life and development.

Regardless of how it ended, what she learned from serving him will always be a part of her.

“Dammit, Theron. I hate this planet.”  “I know, boss. But... at least the scenery is distinct?” “Theron, everything we run into can potentially kill us. See that thing there? It looks just like the probes with the death rays from before. Except bigger, meaner and with more red lights.”  “Ouch. I see your point.” “The other only thing that could make this world any worse is if someone i actually trusted betrayed me here.” “......” “Theron?”
