WIP Intro - Brighter Than Fire

Title: Brighter Than Fire

Genre: High Fantasy, Adventure, New Adult, (eventual) Romance

Themes: Family, Friendship, Growth, Resilience, Survival, Fantasy Religion and Mythology, Dragons, Magic and the Abuse of Magic, Werewolves

Status: First Draft

About: Brighter Than Fire is set in a large, mostly medieval world with a diverse geography, featuring numerous nations recovering from being divided by past conflict. 

Magic is a force that exists in all that beings, but only some are lucky enough to be able to manipulate it. Not all who have that ability have it equal measure. While some may barely manage to swirl water in a cup, others may have the power to dam a whole river. Mages can be powerful allies and terrible enemies.

The fauna of the world is also affected by magic in several ways. One, by being cast upon by humans. Another, by being able to manipulate magic themselves. It makes for peculiar sightings in wild. 

Dragons are a large aspect in this story and several ‘species’ will be featured in time.

Characters: There are plenty that have been planned for, but only a few have actually gotten names and solid parts in the story.

Aria is our main protagonist. She comes from an isolated culture in the western reaches of the world. She, and a dozen others, escaped an invasion and genocide of their people when she was very young. Their escape led them to an island far off the coast of their homeland. There she grew to be a skilled hunter and survivor, as well as a very inquisitive soul. She is a mage whose skills lay in the art of healing thanks to the teachings of her aunt.

Echo is Aria’s companion and charge. He is a feathered dragon that she rescued as a hatchling and brought along on her journey. Currently in the story, Echo is barely five months old and just at the end of shedding his down feathers.

Vun is Aria’s second animal companion and steed. He is a light bay mule with three white socks. His age is undetermined.

Brianna is a friend Aria encounters approximately a month into her journey. She is a very neat and organised person and a devoted friend. She and Aria take to each other like fish to water. Vun, however, is not too sure about her and with good reason.

Omar is an elderly man who agrees to shelter Aria for the cold season. He is a farmer on the outskirts of the Southern Capital. He owns four dogs (inspired by Polish Lowland Sheepdogs) and farms a domesticated type of elk.

Been noodling over Flicker's potential boyfriend for ages, and finally happy with him!

So here's Omar~ He's an actor but he's kind of struggling, Flicker's helping him financially and he's a little insecure about it. He likes to be relied on, he does the high reaching and heavy lifting, and Flicker holds his hand or arm sometimes instead of using his cane

Happy Storyteller Saturday! Is there any symbolism to your OC's names?

Happy STS! Sorry for the late reply and thanks for the ask!

Honestly... no. But you could probably find Aria’s name symbolic if you knew more of the plot for the story.

Her original name was Tarin, but i swapped it for Aria because I thought it sounded more open?? if that makes sense. Starts with a vowel, ends with a vowel. It’s like an open space you can add and remove things from. And of course you also have the actual definition of the word ‘aria’: “a long accompanied song for a solo voice, typically one in an opera or oratorio.”

Echo just sounded cute.

Brianna’s name wasn’t written with any symbolic purpose in mind. I was just compiling a list of what would sound nice if you put “Knight” or “Lady” or “Dame” in front of it and “Brianna” stuck,

Omar’s name, I will admit for the record, was a joke. I’m Bulgarian and ‘omar’ legit means ‘lobster’ in my language. If anyone finds any symbolic meaning behind the animal and connects it to the name than... you know, cool. I could probably dig up some symbolism myself, but I’d rather not do that yet.

Aria has zero experience with kids (i’m not counting the dragon) so she would have no clue what to do with them.

Brianna is a family gal so she’s a kid-person, but she doesn’t have any of her own.

Omar... Omar’s probably good with kids. He strikes me as the indulgent-grandpa type.
