is so cuuuuute! okay so. STORY TIME

this whale shark is made from flip-flops pulled out of the ocean in Kenya. the company, Ocean Sole, pays locals to collect the shoes from the beaches and rivers, then employs artisans from the area to carve them into cool animals and stuff! then they use the profits to help collect more shoes! AND they use the scraps to stuff mattresses for refugee camps!

AND have i mentioned this guy IS THE CUTEST!?!?!

Ocean Sole's sculptures, made from discarded flip-flops, help clean up marine ecosystems where flip-flops have contributed to plastic pollution.

Artists collect old flip-flops from the beach, wash them, and combine them into blocks. They're then carved into a variety of shapes.

Flip-flops, which are generally made from plastics, tend to have their biggest markets in low-income countries. But when discarded, they get washed away to sea, harming marine life.

Ocean Sole recycled approximately 750,000 used flip-flops in 2020 and plans to continue raising awareness for wildlife conservation.

Why your flip flops are killing the oceans

Some reports project that by 2050 there may be more plastic in the sea than fish. And flip flops are a big part of the problem.

Do you know what happens to your flip flops once you're done wearing them?

They're probably ending up in the ocean.

But thankfully there is a group in Kenya that is cleaning up our oceans, one flip-flop at a time.

Ocean Sole upcycles over 800,000 flip flops per year into beautiful sculptures.

Existem duas  manchas gigantescas que se aglomeram no Oceano Pacífico, devido às correntes marítimas. Calcula-se que uma área equivalente à dos Estados Unidos de lixo está flutuando sobre o oceano.

Há quem diga que, na verdade, esta área é muito maior, já que não é fácil estimar seu tamanho real, devido ao constante movimento que ela executa. Invisível para nós, que estamos em terra, utilizando e descartando material freneticamente todos os dias, sem fazer a menor ideia do destino disso tudo que jogamos fora, mas que gera efeitos.

Um desses efeitos é os detritos pararem em praias pelo mundo inteiro. E em uma dessas praias, em Nairobi, Quênia, os moradores decidiram reaproveitar o lixo, criando brinquedos à partir da enorme quantidade de chinelos que vinham pelo mar.

A iniciativa se chama Ocean Sole, empregam cerca de 100 pessoas e já conseguiram reaproveitar mais de 400 toneladas de lixo do oceano.

Repito: 400 toneladas.

What do you do with a pair of old flip-flops? The fact is, we produce billions of pairs of non-biodegradable pairs every year.

But now a Kenyan biologist has at least a partial solution. Julie Church’s artisan manufacturing company, Ocean Sole, turned about 50 tonnes of dirty, discarded and damaged flip-flops into animal ornaments and jewellery in 2013. She anticipates doubling that amount this year, and will pay 25p per kilo to whoever brings them in.

      In Kenya, where plastic flip-flops cost a dollar, beaches are littered not just with broken and battered domestic varieties but with flip-flops from all over the world. Branded flip-flops turn up on Kenya’s east-facing shoreline from the Middle East, South Asia and Australasia.
