Living in Hawaii was quite a gamble for Chad, as he was hired to the company that had fired him, and the only opening was in the office of the small island state. Â He moved with his wife from the mainland and eagerly jumped at the chance to live in paradise. Â The gamble was that he was still unsure of going back to a company that had betrayed him, and to a place so far from familial help, should he need it.
But he went and his first few months were like a dream. Â Everyone in the office was nice and friendly to him, and he even liked the work. Â But when the honeymoon was over, everyday felt like a average day, nothing exciting. Â Itâs not that it was bad, just not great. Â He had expected to enjoy life if the work he was doing was exactly what he wanted. Â But the realization came that he didnât want to move backwards.
Then came the day where he showed up to work and there were only a few other people in the office. Â It was odd that so few people would be there at that early hour. Â Sitting down and logging into his computer, he suddenly remembered the signs of layoffs from so many years ago. Â Chad got up from his desk and went out the back door. Â He found the missing employees in a semicircle around several of the managers. Â He walked up to one of his co-workers and took the box out of his hands, dumping the books it contained on the ground and walking back inside. Â On his way through the door, the co-worker shouted at Chad that he had no right to take the box. Â Chad turned and told the co-worker in the most demonic voice he could muster âFuck Off!â Â and went inside.
At his desk, Chad took all his personal belongings and placed them in the stolen box. Â He told the others they should be doing the same. Â The general manager came inside and called the small group of employees over to him. Â The manager told them what Chad already knew, and walked away. Â Another manager stood against the wall and watched as the other ex-employees emptied their desks.
Chad ran outside to catch the general manager. Â He saw the man just as he opened the door to his car, and shouted after him. Â The general manager looked up.
