Ode to a Pineapple
A single formidable armour
For an army of golden berries teamed
To form a strong willed character.
Spiky and unique, it is no sheep.
Though a necessity in salads
As well as Mexican sweets,
For pizza it is also a divine partner.
Change my mind, I beseech.
After a few too many bits
How my tongue does seeth,
From its subtle acids
That does moderation teach.
This couch it does so much
It holds me up and takes me in
I've spent my darkest days
Just resting on its chin
It's cheap and nothing fancy
I'll admit I didn't know
How valuable its cushiony arms could be
The price is unconditional
And to count the times it's doubled
As a bed, when I am troubled
When I'm spent of life
The couch has time
It takes me in and holds me there
Envelops me, silently
I've never had a friend
So consistent, so unquestioning
I owe this couch my life
It has saved mine many a time
There's no way that I can pay it
It doesn't need for anything
If only you could read, dear couch
You'd know just how grateful I am
I suspect you have a hunch
Though, you're not the type to say
I know you give a lot
More than a back for my spine
It's clear to me you care
You've grown on me as you grow worn
To think I nearly threw you out
I was too superficial and young
You've taught me a priceless lesson
As I restore upon your wings
Take comfort where it's offered
In the very simplest of things.
Fade far away, dissolve, and quite forget What thou among the leaves hast never known, The weariness, the fever, and the fret Here, where men sit and hear each other groan; Where palsy shakes a few, sad, last grey hairs, Where youth grows pale, and spectre-thin, and dies; Where but to think is to be full of sorrow And leaden-eyed despairs; Where beauty cannot keep her lustrous eyes, Or new Love pine at them beyond to-morrow.
Ode to a Nightingale - John Keats
