VN Update + Hello New Followers!

Hello new people who seem to have found their way here from the Sharkweek post! Welcome to the INoaMon (I'm not a Monster) VN dev blog. I recommend checking out the other posts if you're curious about the other monster boyfriends!

In tumblr news, I have tagged all of the relevant posts with the characters' names (finally).

In VN related news I have decided to have it so that TWO characters accompany Grenn/the player in the first part, these are preset pairs as it is most natural for the characters/circumstances (Indigo + Markol, Rais + Garett and Mirell + Levan) and because accounting for more combos would pile on lot more work.

I feel this decision will allow for more flexibility and meaningful interactions instead of deciding your route super early like in the initial draft (originally you would be picking your route right out the gate).  Your route now locks when you arrive at the city.  Any feedback about this change would be appreciated but it's probably too early for that. (Suggestions/requests are of course, always welcome!)

Finally some expressions for Levan and Markol.

Most of Levan's are different degrees of toothy smiles and I guess I indulged a little on the crazier ones. I'm also still figuring out how his silly shark face works when not in profile, he can look REALLY silly on front-on views.

Markol was a bit fun but I'll likely have to make sure that he doesn't have overlapping expressions with Rais. Apparently the temporary solution was to make him have the one eyebrow perpetually raised. /facepalm

Is it just me or did his facial hair get thicker? Oh well I like it.

Figured I may as well post what some of the characters can ~turn into~.

Bird = Garett, accomplishes it by focusing/meditation. It is an acquired skill and considered a mark of adulthood within most communities of Greater Aveskind. According to some groups, this form is considered only suitable for pilgrimage or rituals/rites, however as a whole they are beginning to warm up to the idea that this form can be used for less exclusive practices.

Sharkigator = Levan, this transformation is achieved through extended submersion in (large quantities) of water. Scalekind can only resist this process and will inevitably assume this form when in water. Rapid and severe dehydration from this form can induce a sunburnlike effect on the individual. Frequent repetitions of this process can be fatal to Scalekind.

Tiger/~Catman~ = Markol, this involuntary transformation occurs according to the phase of the moon (in most cases). Due to the many variations of Beastkind there is a spectrum of afflictions. Any Beastkind found to be defying tradecity curfew (without permit) are liable to be detained, fined and/or jailed for intimidation/endangerment of others.

Refined/tweaked some proportions for the height chart- did anyone's sizes surprise you? (To be honest I used relatives for everyone instead of actually looking at the numbers.) This also made me realize I should probably start figuring out a GUI, ah well.

The sketches are character expression/interaction development as well as familiarizing myself with the characters designs. Interesting(?) thing about Grenn is that while drawing him "blind" he tends to get longer bangs and simplified spikes (I went back and trimmed the hair back).

I like drunk Grenn and Garett stealing junkfood the most from the sketches. I'll work more on headlessGrenn's design more since I don't think he's unnerving enough.

This is the revised Levan design, I like it much better now! Sharks are cuter and having BOTH Ocean Companions being so scrawny kind of bothered me, so enjoy your new bulk, Levan UvU.

Levan is a vagrant Scalekind; others describe him as aimless and a step away from being parasitic. He appears to take things in stride and often defers to a dialogue caveat of "just kidding". He offers to go with Grenn since his leaving means there is no more old bread for him to eat.

Top: Color test, Bottom: Sketch + Bonus head

Trivia: Likes going diving for shellfish.  Lets people assume the worst and speak the worst about him. Hates the taste of seaweed and compulsively cracks shells and other breakables to their tiniest bits when bored or poking holes into things.

Design Notes: Levan's design is now more based on a shark and a more subdued palette ~befitting a shark~. His pants are also a lot simpler now since they aren't really his and were so generously donated so that he can be decent in public. (Yes, I've been omitting the junk on everyone so that I can keep this Tumblr SFW)

I made it a mission to keep his not-mohawk hair... thing??? Because. Reasons.

Levan's path is chaotic because of his personality and his "romance" path can go very wrong. I think the new design will give a better first impression and now that he's a bit more sharklike he can give a better range of different kinds of toothy expressions and Grenn's/other's reactions will make more sense!

Indigo is of the armored variety of Beastkind, he speaks very little and can have a very black and white view of situations. He can accompany Grenn on his journey if Grenn requests that Chalice release Indigo from his (unofficial) duty as a guard.

Indigo is extremely attached to his job and fulfilling the real (or imagined) lawful expectations imposed on him.

Top: Used version, Bottom scrapped versions due to not pushing the design enough or being potentially problematic in the long run.

Trivia: Likes drawing geometric patterns with his fingers (with paint or in the dirt). Secretly likes being pet on the head/having his "ears" scratched. Collects buttons and sew-on badges even though he can't sew whatsoever.

Design Notes: I feel Indigo changed significantly, yet very little, at first I felt he wasn't monster-looking enough but then ended up obscuring the parts that ended up getting more monster-y (like his face). I like the design better and ended up making his palette lean more towards a warm grey instead of cool.

A design tweak that isn't apparent here is that he is scaled up in comparison to Grenn (this will probably be more apparent when I post up the size chart).

One thing I didn't consider but am looking forward to working with is that his expressions will have to be mostly conveyed in posture/body or his mouth since his hat obscures most of his face; this is compounded by how little he speaks in the beginning.

Indigo might be a little unpopular because his path (friendship/romance) requires investment/patience/is slow to open up, but I think his path will be kind of cute (when it goes well). 83
