TIME FOR SOME SCREAMING.

I have so god dang many plots I just…

fucking LOVE to death, okay???

Generally its super easy for me to tell my absolute super duper favorite plots because I tend to get mauled by plotbunnies so horribly I will literally pre-write scenes WAAAY ahead of time I want to do for a plot so I don’t lose them. Sure, most of those scenes get completely scrapped or, at best, re-worked once I actually get to the point I can use them, but so what??? I literally have a private archive of pre-written shit for like 20 different things (maybe more) that have never seen the light of day and a lot which never will but fuck man those ideas aren’t going anywhere otherwise. AND I HAVE A MENTAL ARCHIVE TOO. AND A WISHLIST WHICH IS JUST AS HORRENDOUS and is tailored to specific muses from specific muns and doesn’t work for just ANY interpretations. I mean I literally have archives for stuff that was abandoned and is never coming back from like 6 years ago I have a literal problem see. Like tbh if I put as much thought towards RP to other things I could prob be like… a super engineer at NASA or some shit but instead I’m here in my own little world being fandom trash lmfao

ANYWAY.

THE ACTUAL PLOTS THO.

Pretty much anything ever with @kitsunefury tbh like, we have been doing things for so freaking long. There’s like 4 specific ones that managed to last a super long time that were GREAT though.

There was “Allen” which was with young (still with Mana) Allen and an OC which was the very first thing we ever did.

Then we did “Werepet / Bright Heart” with Kanda and another OC that became Kanda’s apprentice (I STILL LAUGH AND CRY ABOUT THAT ONE, HE FUCKING BROKE MY MUSE FOR YEARS, Kanda being turned “nice” by someone else’s brainwashing powers was just too much for the poor muse3).

Then we had the huge fucking 500k+ words each ones.

Ashes to Ashes with my Lavi and their OC, which made Lavi’s life REALLY difficult let me tell you but man was that fun still.

And then there was Black Reflection with evil!Allen and Komui. That one was a trip too and now I have the worst broship feels between these two lmfao

Honestly though we’ve done so damn many threads but those ones were def some of the most memorable ones.

Besides that, I will always and I mean always gush about my stuff with @shaerahaek ESPECIALLY THE WDRSBN STUFF. Because fucking Assassins Creed AU fuck yEAH<3

Seriously though I LOVE White Demon, Red Scribe, Black Nightmare (and all its related prequels, spin-offs, and sequels-to-come) to death. And even though its technically me writing by myself, I am so hyped to tie it off with three more one-shot additions I’ve had planned and in the works (Bookman Afterstory, Bloody Clowns and Tumbleweeds, and Clockwork Augurer) for forever (technically Afterstory was Shae’s idea, I’m just fleshing it out XD).

Also Of Swindlers, Butchers, and Wyrms is pretty damn great. And by great I mean literally nothing in this anywhere should be taken seriously because nothing in this fucking thing is serious. Its literally just filled with cock puns, Lavi being a thieving whore, and Kanda’s face getting terrorized by a devil horse while his shins get terrorized by Tim the Chicken, and everyone thinking Allen is clinically insane for claiming he is an actual dragon. That’s it. That’s the whole dang story. Idiots with chickens.

OKAY BUT ALSO, this is with my Allen muse and blog but both the things I have going with @bookmans-lavi, both a Last of Us AU and Beyond: Two Souls AU. I just fucking adore Immunity and Two for One okay? Liz was the VERY FIRST person I ever RPed with on tumblr and we wrote such an awesome broship over these two nerds AAAAAAAA. No but these two threads are so damn near and dear to me and I have SO MANY THINGS PLANNED I was so damn happy to see her finally come back to Lavi<3

OKAY BUT. YOU, OF COURSE. @flerexsjeler. FRONT LINES [AND] FALSE PERSONAS THO. Dang tho the broship tension between these two bull-headed fucks gives me so much life. Lavi and Kanda are such interpersonal messes and I love every. dang. second. Just hug it out already bitches, damn. I have so many things in store for them just you wait<3

NOT TO MENTION I just can’t leave off anything triplet verse primarily with @ofbookman and @jrbookman, but also with @zephanerosis, @flerexsjeler, @fategiven, @taintedangel, @1nstability​, and also previously with @eldestnoah and @innocence-wings-archive when they were still around! Junior has become such a permanent addition to this blog and a lot of my interactions and I’m honestly surprised because sibling / twin verse kind of stuff was such a turn-off for me before. But now this fucking AU is taking over my life god damn.

Pretty much everything with @glissxndo and her other million blogs lbh here if I went into all of them we’d be here all night cuz it’d be a whole book series by the time I’m done. We may or may not have killed Lavi in that one thread and also have so many horrible things planned for the other threads lmfao RIP Lavi

And there is just no fucking way I can leave off Saviors between myself and @livxwire. This thread was a damn dream of dreams come true, LaviLena shipping AND an angsty wishlist thread AND her writing is fu-cking fantASTIC. Aaaaaah I’m really sad she’s not really on that blog anymore but maybe one day we’ll get back to it.

AND ALSO, @xendure​!! Seriously you guys will never fucking now how EXCITED I was to find a TLOU Ellie blog to roll with that didn’t turn down interacting because of being an anime blog AAAAAAAAAAAH. I JUST REALLY LOVE SCREAMING OVER LAST OF US PLOTS OKAY.

NOT TO MENTION Chatzy plots. Chatzy plots are fucking amazing okay. Royalty AU, Last Dragons AU, The Tower, Seven Sins / Clowneah / Hellrabbit verse, Haunted House, 20 Years Later. I fucking love of all them. Group plots are so god dang fun.

I don’t think I’m missing anything but tbh I’ve got a lot of great things going and also just a general list of threads that’s like 50+ long and those are just since I started Lavi’s blog back in August lmfao–}

Nails lightly working over recently dried locks after a hot shower is the best feeling, especially after having spent the last six or seven hours freezing his ass off. Those were six or seven hours well-spent, of course, hurling snowballs at whoever he could manage to pelt in the face or drop down the back of someone’s shirt, but while Junior loves snow, for all its aesthetic white purity and potential for fun, the cold that accompanies it is another matter.

Even better than snow pranks, and hot showers, and head scratches though is who is doing the head-scratching, and the warmth that is Lavi’s specifically (never mind the thick fleece throw and two comforters they piled into that are almost stiflingly toasty) that he loves curling into is his again.

Its always his, of course. Everything having to do with his brothers is his. Its just been a little hard reaffirming that with Lavi having his own apartment and classes keeping them apart with busy schedules full of projects that are all separate from one another’s. Inevitably, though, classes pause so that everyone can go on break, and despite daily texts and calls, nothing is quite the same as having his “bropillow” back in the flesh.

It’s a definite pick-me-up, and he’d of probably added Lavi’s cooking to the list of things that made today perfect if not for the fact that he was too busy trapping Lavi to the couch with his weight and listening to the other’s steady heartbeat in his ear.

It was almost enough to put him to sleep and want to never move again, murring quietly in contentment. An idle stretch of legs growing stiff brings him a little more awake, and as if to contradict waking, a yawn quickly forms against Lavi’s collarbone.

The flaw, of course, in this little genial bubble of a perfect world he’s solidly formed in his mind, is that not even a hint of any of this has even the faintest undertone of ulterior motive, be that as it may nothing malicious.

So naturally, he doesn’t even think much of Lavi wanting to share some news, automatically jumping to the assumption its something like that he passed some big exam with flying colors, or discovered some really great restaurant they should all go try together, or some event or fun place he has tickets to get into.

Having found a “Boyfriend” is not one of the things on the list of assumptions.

A fond smile curved his lips as he felt Junior yawn against his collarbone as he let his nails lightly scrap against his slightly younger brother’s scalp. As snuggly as his two siblings could get, Lavi was certain that it wouldn’t be like this for very long once he shared his news with Junior. Briefly he wondered if maybe he should lie about what he wanted to tell the other but it wasn’t good to hide this from them any longer.

He was positive that Junior, or Deak, wasn’t going to take this well. Anyone would say that he was being pessimistic, Lavi liked to correct them that they simply didn’t know his brothers. So he savored the peaceful moment between them for a little longer before taking in a silent deep breath.

Damn, this was harder than he’d thought it’d be. Okay. Maybe he shouldn’t have spontaneously decided a few minutes ago that he was going to tell one of his brothers that he was seeing someone without forming a game plan.

   “So I managed to finish my group project I had to do, it sucked. I was stuck doing the presentation after I’d done a good portion of the work. Totally put that in the credits section. Aced my exams, I have a boyfriend, don’t have to work so much during break and I got holiday shopping out of the way,“ Lavi listed off casually, going a little quicker the longer he spoke.

He could’ve revealed that a little bit smoother. But Lavi had only been able to see two ways to break the news to Junior. The first was the way he’d just done it and the other would’ve been ripping the metaphorical band aid off and simply telling him. The redhead panicked a little.

Junior contently listened to Lavi start rattling off about how things had been, not entirely missing the slightly heightened rate of his brother’s heart picking up, or the deeper breath that rolled under him like the sudden wake of a larger wave at sea, but he didn’t spare much thought towards it.

Instead, a small smirk crept onto his lips when Lavi recounted his recent experience with ‘group projects’ and his sneaking it into the credits that he was most responsible for the work, a sleepy-sounding good for you mumbling past his lips.

The fact that Lavi aced his exams was no surprise at all, but it did manage to make his smile remain out of pride for his brother, for all of the two or so seconds before his list reached I have a boyfriend, only to quickly skip merrily past onto the subject of work and holiday shopping, but the mention of boyfriend is still the too-noticeable bump in the road that has him putting the breaks on all other subjects, single eye cracking open.

❝  Boyfriend?  ❞

That it didn’t come up before isn’t so much an issue. Things come up as they develop. That Lavi has a boyfriend and not girlfriend isn’t anything he spares thought to either. He’s not averse to either gender for gender’s sake himself and loves his siblings unconditionally.

Moreso, its the very idea of intimacy and future with someone outside of Them no matter who the person in question is that has him warily curious.

To put it, quite simply, into proper cohesion: no one, as far as he’s ever met, is up to a standard worthy of being that involved in his brothers’s lives. Certainly not before he’s put them to the test.

Of course, breaking news and notable hitch of Lavi’s quickened heartbeat aside, its very hard to be properly skeptical or interrogative under the spell of fingers working down the back of his neck and shoulders, which read anxiety in their motions clear as day and further spark suspicion in the middle child of three.

Its an ever present knowledge that Junior could always tell him to stop, that the motions are distracting, but that would mean Lavi would stop and he hasn’t quite reached a point where he’d be find with losing out on that kind of affection yet. He can always still get more invasive about it later, which he will, but that’s neither here nor there.

20 Years Later

Twenty years is a long fucking time. Its a long time for people to change. It’s a long time for circumstances to become different. Its a long time for people to grow together and to grow apart. Its just plain a long time, but not long enough of a wait for this.

No, its been way too fuckin’ short for this.

A dry laugh bubbles in his throat, laughing at the sick irony of it all. He stayed away from that damn place instead of coming back, of course, because of this. Because he didn’t want to see his god damn face ever again. And he never went back, and he’s not back now, but of course Lavi fucking moved, and how dare he, because how is Junior supposed to avoid him if he doesn’t know where he fucking is to not go there.

Cheater, fucking cheater, he can’t do that, its cheating!

That he shares that face is irreconcilable, he can’t escape that, but at least since then he’s tried not to look the same. He changed up his hair, dyed it a different shade, got contacts that made the color of his eyes different, and tattoos like the one under his eye, among other things, all in an attempt to start over. He couldn’t do a damn thing about his face, really, and amazingly enough, one thing he didn’t get rid of was the eye patch.

Of course Lavi fucking got rid of it. They never needed it. There was never anything wrong with their eyes. They just started it as a thing to be different, because it was cool and made them mysterious and fuck whoever told them they couldn’t. It had been a thing to do together, a great game that held a special place in their lives as triplets, that no one else was clever enough to think of doing just because, so of fucking course Lavi got rid of it.

Of fucking course.

His own eye alights at the sight of the other, this not having been part of the plan. Realization seems to dawn slowly.

Yeah, recognize who it is now, you traitorous fuck?

Fair enough, becoming something different and separating himself from that whole identical triplet thing was the whole fucking point. Still, he isn’t sure whether to be amused or irate that it takes so damn long for Lavi to realize who’s standing in front of him at this dangerously late hour.

What should he even say?

‘Surprise, surprise, the shady asshole you don’t want to meet in a dark alley is yours truly’?

“Where have you been?” is the question that arises first, and eye watches Lavi in cold regard, unflinching. He hasn’t forgotten or forgiven. Not by a long fucking shot. That much he thinks should be clear, and passive, seething silence fills the void. Then, of course, comes the next question that Lavi actually has the fucking nerve to voice. “Where’s Deak?”

His laugh startles, a loud, broken bark that erupts from his chest before he can stop it, as if hearing a great joke. Where is Deak? Where is Deak? he fucking asks. Oh, wouldn’t he like to fucking know.

❝  Deak has fuck all to say to you. ❞ The words come with a little bit of spittle he doesn’t even notice, narrowing his eye into a slit. Really though, how dare he even ask? As if he even cares. He made his damn choice.

His lips upturn into a sneer, mocking.

❝  So how is the big brother doing?  ❞ He absolutely refuses to even acknowledge he has a name. He’s not going to extend that kind of courtesy, and any tone he puts on big brother is a slight. ❝  Having fun with your little hubby?  ❞

He doesn’t even know if they’re still together, honestly, but frankly he doesn’t care. He cares even less that Lavi looks offended and hurt. Good. Let him be fucking hurt.

❝  Get your happy little ending with your big ol’ happy fucking family, did you?  ❞

And then comes the bumbling for words, the stumbling over apologies taken back a moment later by accusations against them and their problems, the confusion and trying to come to terms that he’s addressing one of his alleged brothers. Junior doesn’t give a rat’s ass for any of it. He listens in passive disinterest, making it a point to look as disinterested as he feels, but he doesn’t really hear any of it. He just doesn’t care.

And then that stupid fucking question again. “Where’s Deak?” God, shut up already.

❝  What? It ain’t good enough t’ have me in front of you? I’m fuckin’ flattered.  ❞

Insistence comes next, and name-calling, because he must apparently be fucking stupid to think that Lavi doesn’t care about both of them and he doesn’t have favorites between them. Of course he doesn’t have favorites with them. Because his favorite is his fucking boyfriend.

He laughs again, that same taunting, malicious sound as before. Okay, fine, he’ll answer the god damn question since Lavi wants to know so bad.

❝  You want to know where Deak fucking is? Right fucking here. He’s always here- ❞ he thumbs at the left side of his breast, over where his heart should be if, he even had one, but more often than not the verdict is that he doesn’t. Which is a-fucking-okay with him, because who even needs the damn thing? ❝  -a lot fucking closer than you ever were alive.  ❞

Lavi balks at the implication of the words. Because of course, Deak is fucking dead. He’s been dead for a long time. Lavi never knew. Of course he didn’t. He was too damn busy to notice.

And of course Lavi gets angry.

“What did you do?”

And now its Junior’s turn to get angry (angrier). Because, no. Fuck you, Lavi. You don’t get to be fucking angry.

❝  I didn’t do jack diddly fucking piddle shit. You did!  ❞

And of course, because of the disconnect between them leaving and him dying, he doesn’t understand it, and he won’t accept it, because he, of course, didn’t do anything. He’s 'innocent’ in all this. And Junior would laugh, because that’s so fucking funny he should think so, but he’s done laughing.

Deak wouldn’t be laughing.

Deak wasn’t fucking laughing when he took his own life.

He – Junior – wasn’t good enough to stop him, and Lavi wasn’t good enough to have him. No one was fucking good enough for Deak, and unlike every other thought train his mind had been chugging along with, it was the only musing so far that was sincere.

He didn’t blame Deak for that, no matter how much it still hurt. He blamed Lavi. For all of it.

❝  You were just so fuckin’ busy playing lover-boy that you didn’t notice what a mess you fucking made of him. He chose to go, because what was the fuckin’ point anymore? You’d rather go and play pretend without us.  ❞

Grinning toothily, he spread his arms wide, as if trying to show something off, but what he could possibly be showing off in nothing but a dark alley on a drizzling night, even he wasn’t completely sure. All he knows is the look on Lavi’s face is fucking priceless.

❝  And y'know what? Good fuckin’ riddance! I may have never even been a vague hop, skip, and a jump away from bein’ fuckin’ perfect, but I never gave up on him even then! I’ve been living it up enough for the both of us just like he fuckin’ wanted and made me swear before that last fuckin’ breath. Know what the best fuckin’ part of doing Hits for people is? All the god damn money you could ever want to live it up!  ❞

Oh, sorry, did he not mention that before? Lavi’s face reminds him now he didn’t. Woops, yep, he’s taken up being a hitman. Surprised, Lavi?

❝  Last year it was Cancun, and the year before that, fucking Disneyland, and the year before that we vacationed in Maui. This year we’re thinking Paris, and its going to be great, and you’re not fucking invited.  ❞

That Lavi is looking increasingly disturbed is the cherry on top, because We implies plural and the only person in the conversation besides Junior and Lavi is Deak and Deak is dead, and they both know he isn’t talking about anyone else. He didn’t even tell Road or Yuu or Bookman where he was or where he was going after their family break-up. He cut off from everyone without a word. Total radio silence.

He’s been alone all this time.

No, not alone. He’s not alone! He has Deak. He always has Deak, Deak is always fucking there, he is. He’s right here, right fucking here, like always.

And he doesn’t need anyone else.

They’re here. They, they, they. Two. Them. He’s not alone. He’s not.

A touch, subtle and tentative. He recoils and whirls. He snarls. He shows his teeth like a dog on the attack. And he’ll fucking bite. Don’t think he won’t. He’ll take that fucking hand clean off, and the other hand if he has to, and when both are out of the way he’ll go for the throat.

No one fucking touches him.

No one.

Fucking least of all that traitor.

❝  DON’T touch us! Stay the hell away from us! You’ve done enough! More than fucking enough! We don’t need you anymore!  ❞

Its a lie.

It’s not.

It’s a lie.

It’s NOT!

It’s a LIE.

Lavi didn’t need them. But they had needed him. Deak fucking needed him. He – Junior – wasn’t enough, they needed Lavi, and when he wasn’t there, Deak killed himself, because just Junior wasn’t enough, and he fucking left him alone.

Not alone. Not alone. Deak’s here. Still fucking here. I’M here. I’m always here. We’re here. I’m here for you. Don’t go. Don’t fucking GO.

He tries to forget Lavi, right-in-front-of-him Lavi, it shouldn’t be Lavi, it should be DEAK. He grabs his hair, claws into his scalp, tries to beat it out of his skull with his fists.

Deak. Deak. Deak. DEAK.

“…you need help…”

And he just-…

-fucking-…

TOUCHES him again!

BANG.

The shot misses, skips just past Lavi’s ear, just shy of taking it off as it passes, and instead makes a dent in the wall behind the redhead, eye sharp with a deadly glare that means business as he shuffles backwards, holding the gun extended and aimed to kill.

❝  I NEVER miss.  ❞ The only warning he’s going to give that this time, missing was deliberate, and he won’t miss again. Not even if he has to empty every clip he has to see the other lying in a lake of his own blood. Not even if he has to go down with him just to see the like-faced bastard finally fall. ❝  You stay away from us. You’re not one of us. You chose. If I see you so much as glance our way again, you and HIM are next, and I won’t be quick and merciful about it. I’ll make you both suffer.  ❞

And that’s the last bit of time he spares, before he turns and bolts, far away, destination set to fuck knows where, and he’s never going to stop running, even if no one is chasing. Just him and Deak.

It’s been twenty years. So long since he last saw Junior and Deak. Fuck, he missed them so much, everyday. The parting of his brothers had left the older sibling feeling hollow and lost with them not being a part of his everyday. Be it a small text or a simple call, seeing each other and laughing together, but now there was nothing.

Just an emptiness.

Nea, once boyfriend but now husband, helped him through those times whenever his brothers’ absence affected him greatly or when he’d hit his limit on dead ends when trying to find them. He helped fill the hollowness within him and Lavi loved him so much for being there for him during those moments. For sticking with him.

But despite this, there was always an uneasiness lurking in the back of his mind.

At first, when it’d only been a couple weeks that Junior and Deak had left, he knew that it was a sense of loss and unbalance, but Lavi remembered when it’d been a couple months after they’d left. He’d felt like something was ripped from him and it’d scared him. Even though he’d already been looking for his brothers before, his search had become more frantic.

Something had happened and Lavi hoped that it wasn’t what he feared.

That he hadn’t lost them completely.

Twenty years, no sign of them anywhere, and even if Lavi had forced himself to move on with life, he always kept an eye out for anything that could tell him where his brothers were. So imagine his shock when twenty years, five months, two weeks and one day later he sees Junior. All that time that pass didn’t seem like so much but at the same time a lot.

Gone was the vibrancy of their natural hair color, dulled down in a darker shade and the contacts went well with it, the tattoo along his left cheekbone threw Lavi off. It was…jarring. Everything about Junior’s appearance was, it told him that the other hadn’t wanted to look like himself anymore. Like them.

Pushing down the hurt, Lavi took a quick glance around, expecting to see Deak standing behind Junior but when he saw that it was just Junior, icy dread began curl around his heart. That feeling from years prior came back like a punch to the face and he did his utmost best to not let it show.

Asking where they’ve been didn’t seem to do jack shit to get Junior to talk, not until he asked the other pressing question. Where’s Deak?

The laugh didn’t bode well and he almost didn’t want to know, but that was their brother. Lavi needed to know. Even after the fight that broke them apart years ago, Lavi never stopped caring or worrying about his little brothers. He hated that Junior wouldn’t tell him. All because of the choices they made before.

Junior’s mocking tone in his questions hurt. He wasn’t… Was he…?

   “I’m sorry, Riq– Junior,” He probably didn’t have the right to call his own brother by his actual name anymore. It’d probably just piss the other off. “I just don’t understand why you and Deak had an issue with Nea. I found someone that I wanted to be with and ya both didn’t want me to be happy with him. You wouldn’t even tolerate him for me! Y’never gave me a reason! Ya both just packed up and fuckin’ left!”

Nothing. Even after all these years, nothing. Lavi was met with cold silence.

    “Where’s Deak?” The redhead asked again, eyes narrowing this time and his voice gave away a small tremor as he clenched his fists by his sides.

There, a response but not the answer he sought.

    “I’d rather have ya both present. Stop bein’ an asshole and tell me where the fuck Deak is,” He growled in annoyance, the other’s laugh was becoming grating. But the answer, the answer that Junior gives him has Lavi paling at the implication of those words.

He couldn’t be… No, no, no! Deak couldn’t be dead. Junior wouldn’t ever let something happen to their brother. This couldn’t be right. Where was Junior when this happened? Lavi couldn’t fucking be there since they were gone and he couldn’t find them but Junior could’ve done something to prevent whatever happened to Deak from happening. He could still be alive.

“What did you do?!” Anger laced his words as green eyes glared at the other which got him a mirrored look. Even with all the changes Junior had done to himself, Lavi could still see him under all of it.

He flinched, not a lot but he still did, at the accusation that he’d been the one who did something. That it was his fault that Deak was dead. Hearing all the words that Junior spat out at him, Lavi felt like he was being stabbed repeatedly while a burning anger rose in him.

Lavi couldn’t hide the shock at the profession that Junior had chosen and almost immediately, a screen name came to mind. Even after so many years, Lavi was still the most successful information broker in the underground. To think, all this time he’d been talking to his brother and they hadn’t even known it.

Those thoughts were slammed on the back burner as Junior continued.

Concern flew at the forefront of everything. Junior was speaking like their brother was still alive when the other had made it very clear that Deak was truly gone.

He kept saying ‘we’ when there wasn’t a ‘we’, it was just him, Junior. The redhead wasn’t sure when he’d moved forward during Junior’s rant when the other had turned his back, but he reached out, just to touch him, fingers brushing against his shoulder. Lavi couldn’t stop himself from recoiling back as Junior whirled around on him, impersonating an attack dog or… an animal who’s been hurt and is just trying to protect himself from more harm.

More words were spat at him, how he’d done enough damage to them and that they–Junior didn’t need him anymore. Junior might say that he doesn’t need Lavi anymore, but Lavi needs his brothers. Brother. He’s needed them since they left twenty years ago, he still needs them now.

Junior suddenly grabbing at his own hair and hitting his head with his fists has the elder brother, despite the anger and hurt, reaching out once more, this time for his wrist to get him to stop hurting himself. Even with all the fuck ups they’ve done, Lavi still worried and  he’s scared for his brother.

    “Junior, please, you need help–”

A quick movement and a gleam of metal before the deafening shot was heard, and he had felt the air against his right ear where the bullet flew by. Green eyes widened in shock as he holds his hands up in front of him in surrender and takes a few steps back to give Junior the space he desires.

Junior had actually shot at him.

The threat is clear along with everything else. He watched as Junior ran, ran out of his life again. Lavi was still blamed for everything when they all shared the blame. All he had wanted was to be happy with his brothers and Nea, but instead he got a broken family. He was made out to be the ultimate bad guy, even Deak apparently thought he’d given up on them when he hadn’t.

Deak was dead and Junior was….broken and breaking further. Lavi knew damn well he couldn’t fix everything with a snap of his fingers, but like fuck he was going to let Junior get away from him a second time. He wasn’t helpless and neither was Nea.

Lips pressing into a thin line, Lavi broke into a run, heading back home as his expression hardened in determination.

This needed careful planning.

When Junior ran, he never had a destination in mind and never stopped running to somewhere, wherever somewhere was. That was true twenty years ago, and it was true now. Twenty years ago it was the two of them, and Junior had laughed, and he’s said fuck it to society and everything that went with it.

Let’s just keep going. We'll never settle down. Just keep riding wherever we feel like, see the whole world! You and me – never get tied down by anything ever again.

God, everything felt so much simpler back then.

He can’t even remember laughing like he did at the time, so carefree, even when part of him was breaking a little at the hurt from their fight with Lavi. But they were starting over and while Lavi had Nea, Junior had Deak, so everything would be fine.

It wasn’t so much that he didn’t accept Nea, specifically. He just wanted the best for his brothers, and whoever they were better damn well prove that they really were the best. And maybe, maybe, eventually, he would have come to accept that Lavi made the right choice, had some months down the road, he hadn’t lost Deak.

No, not lost. Not fucking lost. He’s here. He’s always here. Fuck. He’s RIGHT here. We started over. Always fucking RIGHT here.

Deak is dead. He knows that, he does, really, truly, he does, but how can he go on accepting even if he knows, and if he doesn’t have something to blame besides himself. And he does blame himself, because, fuck, he wasn’t the brother that Deak needed, but he also blames Lavi. Of course he blames Lavi. This is his fucking fault too. It is. It is.

And its fucking Nea’s fault too, because if he hadn’t come along, things would be different. Its all their fucking fault. Lavi’s and Nea’s. All of it.

At one point, running, never staying in one place, was supposed to be a fun thing. An adventure. Now it was a necessity. Sticking to one place was unbearable. It was creeping anxiety and bitter loathing for whatever bonds he saw in others and paranoia and a need to be no one to anyone because to be involved hurts too fucking much.

Except when he’s killing. That kind of involvement in people’s lives is the only kind he can stand anymore. It’s wiping one more face he might have to deal with off the face of the Earth. It’s the only thing that really gets his blood racing and his mind distracted, and in his weak moments when he thinks of Deak and Lavi and Nea anyway, he can imagine whoever the fuck he wants in the faces of his marks regardless of whatever poor sap is in front of him pleading for their pathetic lives at the other side of a gun barrel, or when he gets someone that won’t go down easy, that retaliates and manages to get in hits of their own, all he has to think about is surviving and nothing else, because Deak told him to.

Surviving is just another thing to do. He doesn’t fear dying, he survives because he promised. He isn’t afraid. He’s not fucking afraid. Nothing can scare him after losing the only people person worth protecting.

Running away from Lavi a second time though has him shaking uncontrollably. It’s rage and hate. Clearly its just rage and hate, completely justified. He’s not afraid. Hell no. He’s not fucking afraid of anything, especially not Lavi. He’s the one with the gun. He’s the one who’s spent the last twenty-some years making widows and orphans and news headlines and had investigators and cops scrambling in the dark with no leads to any of it except that whoever did it clearly knew what they were doing.

Hell, he was doing it before he and Deak even left, one of his only secrets he kept from either of them, but he’d done it sparingly and not for money and because here and there he just happened to see things that were wrong and nothing right to correct it – except himself. So of course he did something, but those were at people who deserved it. Vigilantism. And back then, his hands were a lot more unsteady.

Now he just kills because it pays well.

He made a reputation for himself. A damn good one. He didn’t even need to use a proper name. Hell, he switched names so often he sometimes forgot what his name actually was. Not his real name – the one Deak calls him in their private moments, that he guards so that only his brothers know it, so that its something else special between them – but the name everyone knows and insists couldn’t possibly be his name, because its not, and that was the best joke of all.

He could kill them both so easily. All it would take is one shot each. He’s good at what he does. He’s good at killing. He’s good at watching them die.

He’s not fucking afraid!

He’s just mad. He’s so fucking mad that he can’t stop fucking SHAKING.

Even when he knows he’s left Lavi far behind his footsteps, made it back to the room where he’s staying, knows that asking where he went would be pointless because of the hour, and trying to trace him through his name impossible, he can’t get rid of the tremors visibly rattling all through him until he can barely get his key in even though the slot is right fucking there.

He imagines Deak again. He imagines Deak’s hand grabbing his, holding it still, and it helps. It always helps. Deak is the only thing that manages to steady him when he’s falling apart, so naturally, he must be right there. Still there. He is. Right there. Not alone. Them. Two. He’s living for them both, so Deak is right there. He has to be.

Even so, the shaking is only gone long enough for him to rip the door open and stumble in, slamming it shut with his back. The next hour is spent pacing and cursing, rummaging for something to eat and unable to keep focus for more than about five seconds on what he’s even doing, which leads to almost throwing a plate at the wall because he’s so fucking frustrated with himself and how much he can’t focus on the simplest god damn task.

But eventually he manages to keep focus on food, because he needs to eat, because he needs to take something to make himself stop, fucking, SHAKING!

In the back of his thoughts he hears Deak telling him to be careful, to watch his dosage, watching and judging him from somewhere unseen, maybe… no, definitely, because of that one instant where he wasn’t careful, and he almost broke his promise, and Deak was so damn pissed, and he’d spent weeks whimpering and begging for forgiveness because Deak had already been betrayed more than enough and he didn’t want to be truly alone.

He reassures, he won’t make the mistake again, he’s keeping his promises. He’s trying to be the brother that deserves Deak’s attention. He’s trying, damn it!

They probably think he’s crazy. Lavi thought he was fucking crazy.

He’s been told it before, by someone else between the then and now, insistence that his brother is gone and he needs to let go. He remembers blowing their fucking brains out. Who’s fucking crazy now? Who tells a gun-toting hitman the only thing that ever mattered to him is gone and its never coming back?

He’s not crazy, they were fucking crazy. Bat-shit fucking insane. And stupid, to boot. Probably a lot fucking stupider after he blew a new one through their face.

Shut up, STUPIDER is a real fucking word.

Oh, and there’s also the stuffed animal. Forty fucking years old and, yes, he sleeps with a fucking stuffed animal. Shut up. Deak hadn’t exactly been keen on his suggestion to steal a tiger. Of course at the time he’d meant a real tiger, because who else could even try to brag about something like that? They were clever enough, they could have pulled it off!

Of course, when he couldn’t get Deak on board, he’d settled for a big stuffed one, which maybe got a little bit of a laugh for a bit because holy shit, he just shoplifted a Babys R’ Us for the stupid thing. Model citizen showing off for all the little kiddies and their horrified mothers. It was pure gold.

He never let go of that stupid stuffed tiger, just like he never let go of Deak, always-there-Deak.

He remembers someone laughing about the ridiculousness of it.

He remembers blowing their head off, too.

Who’s laughing now, fuckwad?

Another perk of always changing aliases and names, no one to send the bill to for cleaning up the brain splatter. Or the warrants for arrest.

Impatience is winning out faster than the sleeping pills, but he tempers himself, fingers tracing over aged cloth covered in probably just as much stitching and scar-like lines as he himself has, because while he certainly has plenty of money for hospital visits, its a whole damn lot harder to deal with identifying records. As it turns out, learning how to carefully repair a stuffed tiger to good-as-new is good practice for stitching shut wounds, too.

All these years, he’s been careful. Its how he hasn’t been caught, by anyone. Most of all, by Lavi. Sure, he’s bumbled a few times, made a few mistakes here and there, but he’s learned and adapted, gotten better at camouflaging himself and not leaving traces. The only constant he’s kept has been a single code name for getting intelligence and connections in the underground, because no one trusts a complete unknown, so he can gather marks for his Hits, but all other information connected with it so sporadic and unreliable that that code name and reputation for efficiency is all anyone has.

Other hitmen? Vengeful crooks? Cops? He doesn’t care about any of them. He could outsmart them all on any a bad day. But the possibility, however slight, that Lavi would catch wind of him was enough, even if unlikely. Or so he assumed, still assumes, because what fucking business would Lavi have in the underground? He’s probably too busy smoozing his lover, and why would he even consider that’s where they’d be anyway? For all he knew, they were living amongst royalty, and besides, with how much money murder brought him, how far was it from the truth really?

Musings and caring dim with drifting awareness, finally, finally, his pills taking effect to spirit him away into oblivion, dose high enough to knock him on his ass for a good, long time, impervious to interjections and disruptions, because he wants to be gone. Not gone like-… not dead, no, no, he PROMISED, but somewhere unreachable, somewhere close as can be to Deak, where fingertips don’t have to trace lines on his own arms and sides in wistful, unrequited need for touch when all other touch burns if only somewhere in his cracked psyche because that dark, quiet nothing will hold him tight enough.

And he wakes up, and answers the coaxing of reality, eventually, because he promised, and he no longer cares or shakes, and he’s steady again, and he can focus finally, and he can pack up what things he has, and hit the road again, and fly far and fast and away from everything he doesn’t want to think about.

And of course Lavi didn’t find him, because of course he doesn’t care, and because of course Junior and Deak are clever enough together that it wouldn’t matter even if Lavi cared to even try looking, and of course he’ll never find them.

Of course.

And this confidence only grows with the passing of months, the succession of many more jobs fulfilling Hits, the leaving behind of one place after another so that he can never be pinned down, until he’s sure enough he’s left all of that behind again, and that it will probably be another twenty damn quiet years before he’ll ever have to see that fucking face again, because there’s been nothing at all to suggest that Lavi had any fucking clue where to even start, and he’d already pulled it off for twenty years, so why fucking worry?

Amazingly, smugly content with himself, its a cold December noon, in a warm city diner on the corner of some trolley tracks, with his eye half-lidded and chin resting on palm noncommittally, where, on a very rare occasion, truly, he chooses to ease up and drop his guard a little to enjoy a melancholy tune played by a local pianist, the irony of the lyrics not lost on him, but stirring uncertainty in his chest at exactly what it should be invoking him to think or feel, if anything at all.

And it shouldn’t mean anything. Because it doesn’t. It’s just a song. He shrugs. He closes his eye to listen anyway, because why get up and leave over one stupid song anyway? It’s just a song. It doesn’t mean anything.

Sometimes he couldn’t believe that they were all identical triplets with some of the shit Junior or Deak pulled. Like, sure, he pulled some crazy crap once in a while but not like Junior did. He was so lucky their old man was out right now. Setting his book down, he fixed the other with an unimpressed stare before running his hand down his face with a sigh.

A single green eye peered up at his brother from where he was sitting, leaning back against the headboard of his bed as he set his book down. Lavi was a bit curious as to who this mystery girl was. He’d been aware that Deak was interested in someone but he hadn’t pried for reasons.

    "Ball kicking aside, who’s the girl that he was seein’ and ya rudely broke up with on behalf of Deak?“ The redhead asked curiously before giving the other a flat look. "Really? Worry about yourself in the dating department, Junior.”

   "And your little zoo excursion got you and that girl thrown in jail for a night, you’re lucky gramps paid bail. Junior, worry about your own ‘flings’ and don’t bother Deak and me whenever we find someone. You’re gonna end up dead with how you go about things on ‘helping a brother out’.“

     Traveling is something the redhead does frequently; this isn’t a simple observation, but is factual. Stories of his journeys are often SHARED in the times between his playful teasings and her huffy rebuttal, when atmospheres are calm and relaxed. Lavi is easy company, a presence that, at first challenged her ability to be dutiful to the emperor, to remain unresponsive and MATURE in wake of his crude jokes, but has proven, given time, he isn’t someone she needs to keep up appearances with.

     But back and forth he goes, from one place to the next, always somehow returning. The days that turn into weeks and then months are often empty, BORING. It’s the same old routine at the palace and the guard has come to dread news of his departure. However, traveling and learning are things he ENJOYS and he has always assured her that he’ll come back, so at least there’s a silver lining to the gloomy clouds on the horizon.

     Her mask lays on the smooth wooden surface of the table, cast aside when she’d first arrived in the imperial library and took a seat beside him. Chin propped in the palm of her flesh hand, she sighs quietly, nut brown eyes drifting to the vast shelves of books and scrolls. Lan never had much reason to spend time in this part of the palace before he and Bookman came along, but now it feels like the place she spends half of her free time.

             Speaking of free time…hers is almost up. 

     Attention shifts back to her companion, vermillion tresses askew as always, fair skin a few shades warmer than it had been when they first met. Her gaze locks with his, that lone eye the same striking shade of Xing’s greenery during the height of spring, a color so brilliant it’s difficult to look away. Unintentional as the contact had been, she holds it for several moments before brows draw together, concerned.

            ❛ It’s unlikely I’ll be able to see you off this time,              so at least TRY to behave for Bookman, will you?              Don’t get yourself in too much trouble. ❜

She rises from her chair, graceful, nearly soundless as metal appendages retrieve painted mask. Left hand falls upon his shoulder for a moment, a minuscule change in pressure that could be interpreted as a display of her fondness. Lan pauses, not wanting to leave just yet, a faint, subconscious nag holding her back.

     She goes with the feeling, follows her gut–its never steered her WRONG, why would it now? The brushing of thin lips against the historian’s cheek is swift, chaste; not quite a peck, but with the same meaning and intentions behind it. Voice quiet, tone WARM, she gives one final well-wish before ruffling vermillion locks and exiting through rice paper doors.
