Major Tallmadge paced outside the house for longer than he could count, feeling as though his boots would wear through by the time he made up his mind to knock on the door. The truth was, General Washington was not right, not right at all. He was going mad. And if there was one person who could talk some sense into him, it was his wife.
Ben had made the long journey down to Mount Vernon in order to speak with the General’s wife personally, knowing full well that sending a messenger wasn’t going to cut it. He needed to hear from her lips himself of what they should do.
Finally working up his courage, Ben loudly rapped his knuckles against the door, hoping it was a sufficient enough knock. Now all he could do was wait.
