Off Vibes
I have never known the steadiness of a heartbeat
quite like his--
the way it patters, patters, patters
like a metronome,
keeping beat of something deep in the cosmos.
It lulls me to sleep
with a sweet smile on my face,
and awakes me to a cocoon of safety.
I count my breaths between its strums
and occasionally make up tunes
to hum around its fire.
It is because all this
that I can feel it
within my body and my spirit,
when its beat is off
by even a hair.
It is slight, to where the untrained ear may not detect
its’ subtle inconsistency--
but it is so intertwined with the fabric of my creation
that it rings out like a chapel bell
in town square.
It rattles me.
It shakes me.
It confounds me
right down to my very core.
And despite all my pleasure, bliss, and harmony,
I grow small inside of myself and ask the harrowing question: “is it because of me?”
