That sounds plausible. -ei- in general is a really tricky sequence with a lot of possible pronunciations. The /i/ pronunciation seems to mostly happen after a -c-, especially in verbs ending in -ceive, otherwise /ej/ seems to be more common.
Yeah, I perceive /eI/ as more common myself, but I’m not sure that that’s not influenced by me knowing IPA and, like, Japanese.
