There was one song that really took over 2014 for Les Amis. It had started off innocent enough, a gentle melody floating from the radio on Grantaire’s windowsill. A song that amused the male almost immediately, after all, he had to commend any song that romanticized the notion of being drunk. Soon enough Beyonce’s Drunk in Love was everywhere and Grantaire had it on repeat. It was a beautiful moment when he found that Courfeyrac also had a passion for the song. In the near constant blasting of said song Grantaire and Courfeyrac bonded like never before. Whilst they had the time of their lives some of their friends did not.
“I used to enjoy it” Eponine scowled “but I think if I hear it one more time I’ll hit something.”
Marius gulped watching the feisty female; he didn’t doubt for a moment that she would. With this in mind he shuffled his seat a little away from her.
“I can agree with you there” Enjolras sighed “the song is ridiculous”
Try as they might the group simply couldn’t escape it, because if the terrible twosome weren’t playing it they were singing it.
Marius was perplexed by the song; he listened to it with them and didn’t quite understand the lyrics. At first he’d thought it was a sweet song, with a lovely idea of being so in love that you feel giddy and drunk. But the lyrics didn’t make any sense. References to wood and watermelon had him more than a little confused. Even so, he did like the melody and he did sing along.
The young male had tried to ask his friends about the lyrics, his main question being why was she drinking watermelon? But the only response he’d get was laughter. This only led to a further question, why was watermelon funny?
There was one person that Marius could trust to give him a proper answer, one person who would never mock him like they did. So as they sat down for coffee Marius fixed Cosette with a serious expression.
“Cosette” he said “I need your help. I’m confused, why is Beyonce singing about drinking Watermelon? Is drinking watermelon good for you?”
The blond blinked and stared at Marius, not quite sure how to respond to the question. She fought a blush and glanced away “Marius, what do you think the song is about?”
“I don’t know! That’s the thing. I’m so confused, why is she in the kitchen and can you really get drunk off love?”
Cosette sighed and looked back up at him.
One thing was for sure, this was going to be one awkward conversation.
[Just a silly little drabble inspired by officialcapecod's idea that Grantaire and Courfeyrac would be rather fond of Drunk in Love. I added an awkward Marius, because awkward Marius is always needed.]
