hope is a fragile thing.

you have hope. you've always had hope. it is your job and your duty, written in the marrow of your bones and pumping through the veins of your heart, telling you never to stop, never to lose it, and always to fight and always to run. 

you have hope, but there's less of it. the maze is cruel and you've seen your friend broken at the feet of unforgiving stone. you've seen brothers fed to  monsters. you've seen them torn in half and buried in open caskets of dirt. and the worst part is you've ran and ran and mapped the maze until there was nothing new, and all you have is paper covered in useless fragments and blood under your fingernails. 

you have hope, but it's nearly ripped out  of your chest when your friend is told by a man with cold eyes that he is going to  die. you remember finding him in a bed of his own blood, and it seems like some sick kind of irony that he picked himself up from suicide only to be told it was inevitable from the start. 

you have hope, but then you find a note  scribbled on a piece of paper and it feels like your heart's been stabbed clean through. 

you have hope, but your friend tells you  with vicious eyes to leave him in the darkness of a prison surrounded by people more animal than they are human. but you leave him  because he tells you to, even though you  both know you'll try to find him again. and you tell yourself that you will. you will. 

you have hope, but it's been two months and you're in paradise and he's not. thomas never meets your eyes when you question him, and eventually you stop asking. because maybe even if your friend's out of his mind, he's still alive, still staring at the same sky that you are, and at least you have that, right?

you have hope, but then thomas finally tells you. you punch him in the eye and lose yourself in the trees, even though you know it's not his fault, even though maybe you would've done the same thing, but you never got to say good bye. you never got to say good bye and you never knew you had to until it was too late.

you're laying back on a grass field with your hands behind your head and it's the shuck picture of paradise. the breeze isn't too cold. the grass feels like a blanket under your back. you're not running anymore; you haven't been running for years now. but it seems like just yesterday you were still in the maze. makes you a little sad, a little nostalgic. because for some reason you're staring at the stars on a hill and you're alone in paradise but you're thinking of when he laid next to you, fingers brushing against yours and lips whispering against your ear. and you remember looking up at the sky and seeing the stars and thinking: maybe this isn't so bad. and now that he's gone and you're alone and only the wind is whispering in your ear -- you realize you're not in paradise. but if you stare at the stars long enough you can pretend that you are, and that there's a warm body laying next to you, that lips are brushing against your cheek. and in those moments you can see his smile in the stars and hear his voice in the breeze. and you think: maybe this isn't so bad. but then you close your eyes.
