“i don’t want to waste anyone’s time, sir. it was just a graze.”
he’s already mostly healed as it is and by the time they get to him, he’s certain that any evidence of a wound will be gone. he’s had worse. but he can’t tell the captain that he’s older than every person on this ship, that he’s seen empires fall and wars beyond belief. not without clearance.

“you aren’t as daft as the majority of your species, then. good.”
the master settles himself across from the man. he is, of course, the one who poisoned the drink, but he’s not one to admit to it either. it worked and that’s the important point.
“you see, i find myself in an... unfortunate conundrum. one i believe you may be able to assist me with.”
does he get her a small seemingly unsignificant gift of some significance as reminders of adventures of sort? he totally does. he leaves it on her desk right before he has to board the buran for a mission out. he doesn't sign it or give a note with it, but he suspects she'll know who it's from.
it’s been a long damn time since she’s considered birthdays as anything more than just another day. of course, that’s nothing she’ll openly say without provocation — or maybe a little too much alcohol. let others enjoy the ritual of it all, if they like, she won’t take it from them. privately, she enjoys seeing the excitement some still find in the idea of growing older, whether it’s them doing it or not.
she’ll never admit to anyone the way she smiles each year when the inevitable, often pre-recorded message comes through, showcasing the grinning faces of her nephews and niece as they wave and offer such glee-filled birthday wishes ( nor will she ever admit the guilt that always swirls when she notes how much they’ve all grown since the last time she’d laid eyes on them, and realizes how long it’s been since she’d dropped in, even to offer a quick hello ). she keeps them. all of them. securely backed up, yet another action in her life prompted by a stalwartly unceasing sentimentality.
messages from anyone else are dealt with on a case-by-case basis. typically, she’ll get a message from her mother — which kat ignores ( or deletes, depending on her mood ), and views only as a notice that the older woman’s still around — no doubt sustained by spite, and spite alone. a few messages will roll in from old friends, and current colleagues — all of which she answers similarly: gracious, offering little in the way of any personal information, save perhaps an irrelevant anecdote that’ll make them feel as if she’s actually sharing.
gifts are another thing entirely. something about receiving with nothing given in return has always left her feeling vaguely uncomfortable — as if she’s left with the feeling of outstanding debt that’s got to be repaid. or maybe gifts just remind her of how often she’s found herself on the receiving end of possessions left behind by loved ones following their deaths. or maybe, eyebrows rise as she considers the final option that presents itself so firmly in her mind, you just overthink everything. it stings a little, to find herself presented with such a valid possibility, though in the end? katrina suspects it’s some combination of the three.
too often, she’s found herself presented with objects that are overwhelmingly meaningless. sentimental as she tends to be, she’s practical as well, and the useless accumulation of objects that mean nothing to her? it feels silly, and perhaps plays some role in the discomfort faced at the idea of a practice — like the giving and receiving of gifts, simply for being alive — that feels somewhat archaic.
of course, when it comes down to sheer fact, there are a small handful of people ( her sister’s children aside ) by whom she doesn’t feel somehow indebted or weighed down when presented with a gift. with something offered, and nothing expected in return. typically, they’re those who know her best — who aren’t kept at bay by a wall of professional courtesy. those who’ve seen her at her best, and at her worst, and at every point in between, and have elected to stick around. through distance, and hardship, and months of no contact, years of not seeing one another — they’re still there.
maybe that’s why she finds herself so filled with a sense of warmth and….. contentment upon spotting the small gift on her desk. it’d taken a double take to even realize it hadn’t always been there, so thoroughly does it carry with it the sense that it belongs there. there’s no note — no attempt at actually showing that it’s a gift at all, and not some inconsequential trinket left behind on accident. except for the fact that it’d taken only a moment to recognize just who it’d come from. it’s immediate, that she begins composing a note to acknowledge that she’d seen it — and, in her own way, that she appreciates it, and the memories it brings with it. there’s none of the artificial bullshit she uses as filler in just about every other goddamn birthday thank you message she constructs. it’s more careful, and deliberate. short, yes, but deliberate.
‘thanks for the gift. pretty bold not taking credit, good thing i know us so well. hope to see you again soon. be safe. — kat’
