He is visible only because he wants to be, and he is playing in the courtyard. Upon further inspection, it is clear to see that he is gardening. Perhaps it is not the most  conventional of gardening, actually, he seems to be burying knives. In the courtyard. 

He looks up, glancing at the person coming towards him with happy eyes but a solemn expression. He doesn’t seem to smile enough, even being such a happy boy.
