“So.. Max.. You busy?”
@ofreversals started following you.
“Hey Max, wake up!” She sat down on her own head beside her friend, throwing the bag of fast food breakfast beside her. “A breakfast burrito awaits!” If they were gonna try to piece all these clues together, they’d need food. They had made no progress at all last night.

"From now on, the car is a place of silent reflection."
Brooke chuckled. Maybe meeting up after all this time hadn’t been the best idea. She and Max had diverted pretty hardcore; after all, it’s not often a student at an art school goes into the field of Artificial Intelligence. Brooke had just gotten her undergraduate degree in computer science, and she wanted some time off, so she’d come back to Arcadia Bay.
To be fair, Max had asked her what she’d been doing since the incident. The answer she’d gotten had probably taken her off guard. “I’m basically in the field of making humans obsolete,” she’d said. “The goal is twofold: solve the control problem, and create a general purpose artificial intelligence that is at least on par with human intellect. Anything less intelligent and we don’t need it. On par is ideal, but that’s a really small target. Though, to be fair, if it’s on par with us we don’t have to worry as much about the control problem. That’s, like, Terminator or whatever, by the way, trying to make sure the AI doesn’t just fucking kill us. Which a lot of people are worried about. And if it’s smarter than us, then we really have to worry about that.”
“Sorry. I’ll try not to talk about possible apocalypses anymore. How’ve you been, Max?”
@ofreversals
“So, this whole---... Leaving Arcadia Bay thing. Regretting yet?”
"So, how long before I do something that pisses you off?"
Brooke wasn’t entirely sure how Max had gotten her hands on the Flash Drive of Doom, the one which contained all the files for her blackmail ring, but there she was, brandishing it to Brooke. And boy did she look upset. Brooke, on the other hand, couldn’t be calmer.
Swiveling around in her chair, she folded her arms across her chest and leaned back a little. “That depends entirely on you, Max,” she said. “And, for the record, I don’t only blackmail people who upset me. It’s just that blackmail’s easier to pull on an enemy than a friend.” She smiled softly before returning her face to its standard flat expression.
“Did you seriously think that I buried myself in my phone and tablet constantly because...what?...I was a tech addict?” She shook her head. “I guess you’re new here. You don’t quite get how things work. And hey, maybe you’ll be the one to change things. Maybe you really are better than me, better than everyone else in this whole damn school. Not that that’s a high bar to set.” Brooke laughed a little. “This school, this town, it’s a microcosm of reality. And in reality, you’ve gotta get your hands dirty if you wanna come out on top. The Prescotts are powerful because they’re ruthless. If you wanna change that, you’ve gotta be ruthless right back. I’ve got dirt on everyone in this whole town. Everyone except Maxine Caulfield. I could walk up to anyone, show them something on that flash drive, and demand two grand by Thursday, and they’d get it to me.”
She gave Max a hard look. “But I don’t. I don’t blackmail everyone I’ve got dirt on. That way, if I need them for something, I have leverage. You getting the picture here, Max? As bad as I am, as disgusted as you are with me, everyone else in this town is worse.”
“ you need to pull yourself together. ”
Brooke let our a derisive snort. “Pull myself together?” she asked. “How the hell should I do that? The richest man on this half of the goddamned continent just made good on a threat he made to me over a year ago. My sister almost died.” Brooke growled. “And he managed to get that stupid drone licensing bill through the state senate, so now I’ve gotta file for damned permit before I fly EVO again.”
She paused. “Did I mention my sister almost died? As in was stabbed with a fucking shiv. Some prison jackass whittled down a plastic spoon because Sean Prescott told him to stab my sister. This is some Game of Thrones shit, Max. But of course, you’re too busy taking selfies to empathize with anyone.”
