Something I see semi regularly and really don't like is when someone is criticizing a religious group that does genuinely bad stuff, but includes in their criticism a mostly harmless practice that is either 1) done in marginalized religions or 2) done by marginalized members of the broader religion the criticized group belongs to, as well as that group
One I see a lot is mocking Pentecostals for being adorcists (a concept found in MANY religions, but especially in religions that Pentecostals are in regional conflict with- it is, for example, somewhat common in most of Africa to believe in positive saint/angel/spirit possession as a nurtured relationship). It's been a hot joke for a few months and usually involves the term "religious psychosis" being thrown around, so it also invokes ableism and indirectly, racist narratives about the minds of people who practice adorcism that are rooted in Enlightenment era anti Blackness.
But I also see it not infrequently from Jews criticizing Chabadniks by making fun of their tzaddik veneration (one of the relatively harmless things they do imo, though it gets weird where that overlaps with messianism). Tzaddik veneration not only also happens among a lot of Hasidim, it is a major part of Jewish culture in Africa and West Asia. It has only declined due to explusions and various other forms of violence done to Jews from this region (including violence by other Jews who believe "Oriental" Judaism is inferior to European Judaism). Some communities still maintain this practice (mainly Moroccan Jews), it is very precious to Jews who do so. It was also historically a site of positive interfaith relationships, as until maybe 100 years ago the vast majority of Sunni Muslims believed in Sufi saints and there was a high degree of overlap between Jewish and Muslim traditions in this regard, with some Jews venerating Muslim saints and some Muslims venerating Jewish saints. (Its also probably not a coincidence but I've noticed some modern Hasidic beliefs actually have several similarities to Sufi traditions, but I don't know exactly what happened there).
Frankly I find these kinds of criticism are not only petty, they are primarily founded on two attitudes: "that's unfamiliar so I think it's bad" and "I think this is irrational and we modern, enlightened people must move past it". Both of which are very illogical and disrespectful attitudes to have! In the case of tzaddiks specifically I also mainly see anglosphere Jews comparing it to Catholicism, which isn't unwarranted, but to me betrays a lack of curiosity and research into both Islam and the particulars of how tzaddik veneration came to be. Further this comparison sometimes comes with a sense of superiority- "they're basically pagans haha". Which again, I feel betrays incuriousity not only about what the hell "pagan" or "monotheist" even are (hint: some Hindus consider themselves monotheists, and some "Hindu" schools were recognized as monotheistic and occasionally syncretized with Islam!) but about accepted, modern Jewish mysticism itself, which could easily be slandered as pagan if we apply the same superficial attitude.
I'm not asking anyone to be a mystic or not have opinions on what is or isn't heterodox, but I do wish people would be more respectful and delve deeper into these topics and how these customs impact large swathes of people, especially before explicitly or implicitly comparing them to the financial extortion, racism, or abuse that occurs in Pentecostal or Chabad communities (and more!) when they are simply not the same.
we've all heard of "died and came back wrong" but what about "died and the resurrection ritual also gave me bottom surgery"
HELLO THERE okay. Why not. Time to ask.
